[Poll] Desktop Environment

Hello Users!

I thought it might be interesting to know, which DE or WM Arch Linux users are using the most. Since Arch doesn't come with a predefined DE (like Ubuntu) or with a predefined choice (like openSUSE) I really would like to find out about this.

Feel free to tell which DE you are normally using. I have a poll prepared on my blog:

http://n8schicht.de.vu/2008/01/04/umfra … rch-linux/

I would like to let this poll open for a few weeks or even months, depending on how well this goes  wink

Thank you in advance!

Openbox, which isn't in the poll, but could fall under the Fluxbox/Blackbox option.

Hello!

Maybe, you should add it too or an "Other" choice.

Re: [Poll] Desktop Environment

An "Other" choice and no grouping.
Maybe use a list like this one http://xwinman.org/others.php (common ones are in the menu on the left).

Openbox... I'll wait until kde 4.1 is released
or atleast first bugfix release and then I'll try it but I'll not go back to gnome...

Re: [Poll] Desktop Environment

Oh yes, I completly forgot about an "Other" choice, sorry. I just included that as well...
For "not grouping" it's a bit late, I think.
Please feel free to leave a comment on my blog if you voted for a DE that is "grouped" or if your WM is not in the list. Thank you!

@Gilneas: Thanks for the link, but this list is huge! big_smile  If somebody is using "5dwm" or similar, please check "Other" and explain in a comment  wink

Re: [Poll] Desktop Environment

XFCE with Rox-Filer running as my desktop and file manager.  Nice and quick.  Found it as a suggestion in another thread and have loved it ever since.

Re: [Poll] Desktop Environment

If it helps you at all, I've been running the same poll at our site as well...222 votes so far, with GNOME and KDE leading the pack (as if that's surprising):

http://www.cinderwick.ca/

As for myself, I use xmonad and my wife uses GNOME.

that's my gf, she hasn't been happy since I dropped gnome. She gets used to something and then can't change, sounds way to familiar.

right now I am considering dropping xfce because the desktop app, thunar-volman, and thunar itself still need a lot of work IMHO. Been using for two months and there is just to many quirks about it. Things need ironed out... Maybe I will try ROX, but I do not like how the file manger worked in puppy. I like to have the column on the left so I can quickly change to a directory. Nautilus was great because of this feature. Thunar is half ok, could be better though.

Re: [Poll] Desktop Environment

Moved to XFCE (from GNOME) when I switched to Arch.  Haven't looked back.

Re: [Poll] Desktop Environment

Thanks for your answers so far, 90 guys already voted.
If you had a problem voting, please try again, I noticed my hoster had some kind of a "hick-up", but now everything is working fine again.

Re: [Poll] Desktop Environment

Wow, the *boxes left Gnome behind! That's something I didn't expect, although... Arch isn't a typical Desktop-Distribution, so I did expect the users to install something else than the 2 major DEs. But this is pretty interesting smile

XMonad here. smile
And since we're talking WM's, maybe you should distinguish between standard Gnome+metacity and Gnome+compiz/beryl.

KDE here, chose Arch because Gentoo was to much effort administration wise (used it some years and still like it, it has LOTS of documentation) and Kubuntu was to slow on my laptop. Arch is really snappy and not slower than Gentoo.

Bye, signor_rossi.

But then, wouldn't I also have to distinguish between KDE+Kwin and KDE+compiz?  wink

But I think it's already clear that here at Arch there seem to be some Openbox/Fluxbox fanatics. I really did not see this coming and it's quiet impressive to see those at 2nd place after KDE but before Gnome. Awsome!

I meant a seperate Compiz/Beryl option, regardless of DE. wink

What's more surprising is the amount of XMonad, ratpoison, dwm, wmii, Awesome, PekWM and EvilWM users compared to other distro's.

It seems like lots of people are looking for more minimalistic nowadays. So Gnome/KDE users switch to *Box and *Box users switch to the tiling WM's mentioned before.

Re: [Poll] Desktop Environment

Wow, us Enlightenment people are up to 2%! It's funny, it's probably around the same ratio of Yogi's to everyone else.

Re: [Poll] Desktop Environment

KDE in the lead... hmm.. I wonder what percentage of those users are using KDEmod instead of standard KDE?
