[Poll] KDE or KDEmod with Arch Linux?

Hi guys!

After the success of the first poll and many suggestions from you users, I would like to find out a bit more about the percentage of KDE vs. KDEmod. So all you KDE-users out there: it would be great to let us know which flavour of KDE you are using! Multipe choice is activated this time, and you can also check KDE4.

Here it comes: Poll: KDE or KDEmod with Arch Linux?

I'm also really curious about this one.

Thank you for your participation!

I have used both kdemod and kde and I would just go with kdemod for now until kde4 is stable, then consider kde until kdeomd adopts the 4.* code.

Re: [Poll] KDE or KDEmod with Arch Linux?

Over 80 guys voted so far, and it seems like twice as many Archers are using KDEmod as vanilla KDE. That's more than I expected it to be!
Keep on voting  wink

I'm not too surprised that there's more KDEmod's then vanilla KDEer's..  KDEmod just feels more like how KDE in Arch should be.. minimal installs.

And another vote for KDEmod. I love that they split the tarballs, and the default theme isn't bad either. I can't wait for KDEmod 4. :p

Re: [Poll] KDE or KDEmod with Arch Linux?

Being new, I have not tried the KDEmod yet. I am using vanilla KDE. Is there that much of a difference?

I take it that it can not be installed via Pacman, but must be done manually from tarballs? Do you guys suggest removing KDE before installing KDEmod, or format and do a clean install of Arch to make it right?

Set up the KDEmod repo as per the instructions on their website: http://kdemod.ath.cx/

When I was still using KDE, I was on KDEmod. It's awesome. The ability to have only the packages that you want installed is great. And it's quicker than the regular KDE.

Edit-->

I forgot to mention that both funkyou and dunkelstern (KDEmod devs) are always very responsive and helpful. Of course the KDEmod forums are full of Arch users and in consequence you can expect the same high quality feedback that you're use to getting here.

Re: [Poll] KDE or KDEmod with Arch Linux?

I prefer vanilla KDE, cause I found KDEmod to be somewhat bloated with theme and addons.

Yes, I know that, but I still find vanilla KDE to be more ... khm vanilla. Maybe because I used Slackware for some time and got used to with that.
I think the word 'bloated' was wrong there. I meant more like 'too modified'. I tried it (KDEmod) for some time, but then went back to KDE, cause for me it just felt clearer (I just remove kdetoys and other applications that I don't use).

But I'm seeing that you're doing a great work on KDE4 (it's already in your repos under i686), so I'll be taking another look on KDEmod in the near future.

Re: [Poll] KDE or KDEmod with Arch Linux?

In fact saying KDEmod is more like kde on Arch should be is contradictory. KDE vanilla, is vanilla, Arch is a distro known to provide packages with as little patches as necessary, meaning as vanilla as possible. Add to that, kdemod is heavily tweaked so is not with the KISS philosophy at all. But all in all, I'm interested in trying KDEmod.

I have to agree that KDEmod does break the KISS philosophy of Arch because of it's patches and how it's package base is split up.  It's this "hacking" of the package base into smaller chunks that is the best feature of KDEmod.... I moved to Arch because I wanted more control over what was installed etc... and I am a fan of KDE.  In my eyes that was biggest problem with vanilla KDE (installed too much).  Now KDEmod has filled that void!

Patches or not.. I love KDE mod mostly for it's broken up package base as I'm sure most users do.

Re: [Poll] KDE or KDEmod with Arch Linux?

Well, I decided that my new install had a few things that could be done differently, so I did a format and another clean install of Arch last night with KDEmod. It looks great and I am very pleased with it so far. It feels as polished as KDE on openSUSE, and that is saying a lot.

I have seen the light.

KDEmod is just great. I had vanilla kde on gentoo. Even there I installed the pertty patches (or were they called pretty.... I dont remember) but it was a pain in the ...
KDEmod is one of the main reasons because I dont even think about changing the distro.
I still have Kubuntu on a Laptop but I never would use Kubuntu again. As soon as I dont need the data on my laptop anymore I will put arch with kdemod there too!

Re: [Poll] KDE or KDEmod with Arch Linux?

I have been trying to get use to fluxbox, but can't pull myself away from kde completely. It's just a very cool desktop depite it's bloat, which kdemod enables me to minimizes. kdemod might be heavily tweaked, but to me the tweaks seem to be an improvement over regular kde. The project isn't a small one and the way it's handled, I think, is very cool and proffesional. Despite it not being considered part of the kiss philosophy, I think it overall very much compliments the arch distribution.

Another thanks to Funkyou, and all the maintainers!

KDEmod hands down. I love all the included which and it being more modularized as opposed to vanilla KDE. I hope KDE4 won't even need to have a KDEmod equivalent.

I use KDE in a live faunOS flash drive system which is arch-based and is energy efficient in a compact flash/IDE flash interface....no HDD just flash drives in USB for storage and archiving.

Re: [Poll] KDE or KDEmod with Arch Linux?

221 votes so far for this survey, thank you guys! The result is really astonishing and I hadn't thought that so many Arch Linux KDE users would choose KDEmod over KDE. I always thought of KDEmod as a pure fan project with not as many users as normal KDE.
Since KDE4 might not be usable as main Desktop Environment until version 4.1 I actually might give KDEmod another try...
