Ksoftirqd Problem on dualcore

Running AMD64 x2 Tl-52 Processors on an ASUS T7c Laptop.
OS is ARCH Linux i686.

After 1-2 hrs uptime my fans start getting noisy.

htop shows one CPU running with 100% the other doing almost nothing.
top shows my CPUs are using 150% !!!
Ksoftirqd ist running with 100% and wont stop anymore even after another 2hrs of just letting him go.
After 30min my network is disconnecting as well, and I need to reconnect every 15min then.

Booting my System with kernel-option "nosmp" and without "vga=792" (otherwise it just hangs suddenly) everything is just fine!
Despite I am running just one CPU. Or is my System still using two but with different Scheduler System?

Thx for comments

Edit:

Running my System now from 10AM to 7PM with nosmp option it freezed two times! Just hang, in both times transmission bittorrent was running, but nothing else special.

Re: Ksoftirqd Problem on dualcore

no hangs or not as bad, but I have about constant 10-15% usage of ksoftirqd/0 - when otherwise all else is virtually idle. Ubuntu and mandriva forums have identified a problem with the 'cx8800' tv card module, but also a few other people have posted the same problem with no such module loaded, such as me.

I am experiencing very odd, 'choppy' performance overall, and I think I can trace it back to a system upgrade I did through pacman but am not sure which one (because pacman provides no way of verifying this...)

anyway, I have also read one of two other people complaning about 100% usage ... this most definitly can't be normal ... I'll see if I can find anything else on this, but it sure seems like a bug in the kernel from the little I know anyway ..

post back if you find anything..

Re: Ksoftirqd Problem on dualcore

Yes, I can verify this.
I installed from the CD with Kernel 2.6.22-ARCH. It was definetly good at that state.
The whole system was calm, and felt snappy, almost like running under BSD.
I switched because on my Laptop and at work LINUX is more portable an top notch.
That was why I now would like tend to stick to ARCH,
but after upgrading with pacman the glibc and Kernel 2.6.23-ARCH the pain began.

Maybe thats not an ARCH specific thing, but it is again a bad LINUX habit.

Re: Ksoftirqd Problem on dualcore

I upgraded to ARCH LINUX [testing repos] kernel26-2.6.23.13-1.

That fixed the thing for now, its 7 hrs ago.

Re: Ksoftirqd Problem on dualcore

well .. i will try it however I am running an odd XGL configuration on my laptop with ATI and upgrading anything above 2.6.23.9 seems to break XGL somehow ..... or fglrx maybe ? anyway, i'm afraid nothing will run after that ... and the newer ati drivers are not mature enough to be used IMO.

Anyway I will try it ... i tried reverting to 2.6.22 but i still had high usage from ksoftirqd as per 'top' (was unable to boot into X cause modules werent loading under 22)

I cant see how this would be an arch only problem ... like i said, bunch of mandriva and ubuntu forums are complaining about this ... May not like ubuntu, but they sure have a large user base that is quick to point out quirks in the system..

Re: Ksoftirqd Problem on dualcore

well, update ... seems like the culprit was the et131x module, the driver for my ethernet port, which seems to provoque alot of interupts ...... removing it simply solved the problem .. and since I don't ever use my ethernet port other than on rare occasions, I am fine with that.

Hope this may help ..

Re: Ksoftirqd Problem on dualcore

Nice to hear you solved the thing!!

My issue returnes even on the 2.6.22 repeatingly running several hours transmission (torrrent-client).
Using another client like bittorrent didn't fixed that.

As long as I use my system as usual, I don't experience any problems at all.

I guess its I/O and Scheduling Problem.

Thank you
