Hi ferhiord! Maybe you'd like to know that you can install kdemod4, which is stable, at least for me, and can compile kde apps perfectly. Check out http://kdemod.ath.cx and youll see the info to get the kde4 build. You'll have like the final 4.0.0 release. There are a lot of features which don't work, but it's great for trying or if you feel adventurous. Once you get it, you can download my PKGBUILD for Dragon Player, the successor of Codeine, a lightweight video player for KDE. See you!

"stable enough" would mean 4.1 - 4.2 (if even there). 4.0 is more than less a technology preview / porting environment which is not even complete (yet).
Ability is nothing without opportunity.

Is installing kdemod4 going to conflict or damage my vanilla kde3 setup or do they coexist happily?
Offline
It co-exists. But use a own user for kde4.

Thanks. I'll try it.
edit: Looks like it won't install properly without [testing] enabled which I'd rather not do on my main box. I'll try it when all it's dependencies are in [core], [extra] and [community].

Why just not use the term "repos"?
Use the Source, Luke!

I personally like the term "Current" to imply "Not Testing" - it kinda meshes with how we've got CVS set up right now, and makes more sense now that the [current] repo is renamed.
I hereby declare a naming convention!
Current = package in official non-testing repos
Testing = package in official testing repo
Insane = Cerebral
Now, let's see if my clearly unquestionable authority is upheld in this matter.

Sorry, but we're not going to break everybody's KDE desktop just to keep the "uber-latest" version in the repos.
KDE3 is still being maintained. We will have the bleeding-edge in KDE3 packages.

The KDEmod web site's main page says it uses "Qt3"... kde4 includes a port to qt4..... Is that just a part of the site someone forgot to edit?

KDE4 is officially launched now, so, is it getting into repos soon?
If they launch it, it has to be stable enough... even for the "migthy" archlinux community
2007.08 - The last proper ARCH install cd.
RIP installer :'-(

KDE4.0 != KDE4
So it just another beta, but they call it KDE4.0 for some reason...

KDE 4.0 is not KDE4 but only the first (4.0.0 even non-bugfix) release in a years-long KDE4 series to come.
Sounds good...

As i pointed out, KDE 4.0.0 is a platform for developers to port applications and continue the work on the programs. The core libraries are finished, there is a desktop available, but it's not even commonly stable nor full featured. Also, plasma is missing a lot of work, which will be done till 4.1.
We can expect kde4.1 with the end of the year 2008, just for you to see how much is still missing.
I will have a kde4 installation, for testing purposes. But kde3 fit well for years as a desktop now, and will fit for another year as well.
As soon as kde4 is really stable and full features, i don't think they will continue to maintain the kde3 desktop. Till then they even recommend sticking with the 3.x series.
As pointed out nicely by JaQoB, the kde3 desktop continues to be maintained.
Why kde 4.0? Simple, it's a huge milestone they have reached, and they have a functional desktop for developing and porting applications. Everything (including music players) is available for common development tasks. A lot of other common things are missing, buggy and i won't consider it as stable enough for doing my daily works.
Ability is nothing without opportunity.

... What strange psychoactive drugs are the KDE devs on? Seriously, why call it 4.0 if it is actually a beta? Why not call it 4.0b1 like everyone else?

I heard 6 months away for 4.1. I think the early release is all about getting the ball rolling, and honestly it seems to be working. Anyone remember when Linux 2.6 came out? There were bugs all over the place. I reckon with Free Software you've just got to throw it out there at some point, since you can't hire a bunch of testers to come in.
It may sound rather unprofessional, but if you want professional I guess you go to Red Hat or whoever and I bet you they won't be selling KDE4 for a while, so there you go.

Well ... I'm glad the devs have already considered that because I was going to "protect" myself by disallowing upgrade of KDE in pacman.
Truth be said, all the reviews I have read concur that "KDE 4.0 is not for the faint of hart" ... and that does not sound "usable" or "production" to me.

Worth reading for y'all: http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2008/01/talking-bluntly.html
Been playing with KDE 4.0 today and it's quite quite usable. KDE3 apps work without problems in KDE4, so one can be pretty productive.

Simple, using FF3 as an example, the Betas are stable yet Add-On developers wont update till the official version comes out, that is bad for those of us that are using FF3 beta and want certain non updated addons.
Same with KDE4 most apps won't be upgraded to 4 and the new QT till the devs see a 4.0 release, also since the transition is a big one it will also take longer to in some cases rewrite the app to function in KDE/QT4. This gets em off their asses and updating so that when KDE4 is actually useable we will have apps to use with it and not be forced into using KDE3 apps in KDE4
