I don't seem to be able to lock my screen (when using the panel applet). Do I need to install a screensaver to be able to lock the screen?
Many thanks.

xfce is using xscreensaver by default to lock the screen. You can also make it use gnome-screensaver if you want

yes... xflock4 works with either xscreen-saver or gnome-screensaver.
You can install slock (community repo) and hack xflock to use it instead, it's just a couple lines of bash (/usr/bin/xflock4)...
slock makes the screen black (though xfce4 composite sometimes conflicts with it and becomes translucid :\) until you input your password (no dialogs for input, you just enter, but you have to press enter, esc or backspaces to clear what you have entered to start again). I have hacked it to slock to unlock the screen as soon as you type the correct password, no matter what you entered before. If you want I can upload it, I even have a PKGBUILD...

I've tried out xscreensaver, yet to try slock. It's a shame gnome-screensaver has a ridiculous amount of gnome dependencies (to be expected I guess). Thanks for the offer nDray, but i'll save you the trouble
Many thanks.
