We want just KDE4.0 in testing, no more ...
Of course, KDE4.0 can't be used in production and we will use KDE3.5.8 for production.
The problem is that KDE4.0 use qt(qt4) like KDE3.5.8 use qt(qt3) and some softwares for KDE4.0 are in testing.
Hello Moustic ( bonjour
)
Why don't you try kdemod4?
It's easy and like STiAT said, funkyou do a really good job.
You enable testing, you follow this step:

LOL, that page is amusing. Someone needs to pass along the message that this is not math class. 4.0 and 4 do not ==. Maybe they should start another theory, how about 4.9 and work backwards to KDE4?
My take on it is this, KDE4 is the finished product, consisting of builds .0 through .9. KDE4.0 is the beginning stage, when it reaches 4.9 then it can be considered complete, since 5.0 would designate a whole new design implementation. Again this isn't math class, 4.9 doesn't necessarily mean its greater then 4. Its a numbering scheme and to that detail it must remain a numbering scheme.

Hello Shaika-Dzari,
Kdemod4 don't work with kdm what obliges to install the gnome desktop manager gdm.
It is not the only problem: to install qtmod (Qt4) qtmod you need to remove qt (Qt3) or install qt-enhanced / qt3 from testing.
Then, the developers of kdemod4 recommend to update archlinux with testing what is risked.
The only allowable resolution would belong to have kde4.0 available in archlinux testing.
It is what make kubuntu, mandriva, opensuse, gentoo and arklinux.

It is risky to enable [testing] for kdemod4, but the solution you propose is to put kde4 in [testing], which requires enabling [testing], which in turn is too risky to be done for kdemod4? Hun? You're confusing me.

I don't consider the kde3 series as "complete", for it's implementation of hardware layers (aRts/ALSA especially).
Oops my bad, aRts is a mess.. Actually one of the first things I do when I first setup KDE3 is disable the aRts sound system.

When I was using kde, and it's still on my system, I remember alot of bugs that seemed to take forever to get fixed. It finally became really solid. I think I would stay happy with the current kde while it's still here, unless you have a testing system set up to help the kde and kdemod guys out. Sooner or later kde4 will take over, and no doubt look nicer, but I'd be willing to bet it will take it a long time to become as solid and stable as kde3 is now.

has anyone actually read this?
Hi
here the current state from my point of view:
kde4 4.0 series is pure crap for end users.
The real replacement status will hopefully come with 4.1 series.
I will not ship kde4 for extra until it's a full replacement for 3.x series. The names should stay and a kde3/kde4 parallell mess is not worth at the
moment.I have a full build environment here and probably i'll place it somewhere that
others can use it too. (an other repository or unstable, but with no kdelibs4
or kdebase4 name scheme!)
But it's far away from 3.x feature richness nor usability.
Monthly or every 2 months a svn snapshot of the trunk(4.1 development) would
make much more fun than the crippled 4.0 series.greetings from kde4 kmail
tpowa
the 6+ months is about kde 4.x hitting testing/extra.

It is more than year since we wait for KDE4.0 and his exit today is a big news.
...
It is impossible for archlinux to ignore it so allow we too to use KDE4.0.
Listen, i prefer stable and fast ArchLinux. Guys like you make me just madness. Want to cry? So cry!
But no unstable and demo soft in stable ArchLinux packages. I think it's not time to include KDE even
until 4.1 release because of it's possible being too and too buggy.
By the way, almost every ArchLinux user prefer Xfce more than KDE. Enjoy, troll !!!!
P.S. KDE 4.0 is not needed.
