So about half of the time that I start an hp pavilion dv6000, it locks up at the point when it says:
Configuring System Clock, or something like that (I didn't find it in any log files)
On top of that, the system hangs when it saves the system clock on shutdown.
What kind of workarounds exist for this issue of an unsupported/uncooperative system clock?

Same story with me.
I have HP Pavillion dv9410US running Arch64.
Couple of days ago I received the recall notice for my laptop from HP
to fix the BIOS (no details of BIOS problem, however).
They say laptop has to be returned for repair in the case if you are experiensing
sertain problems, they enumerate them. Mine didn't have these probs, so
I can disregard the recall, as they write.
I am afraid that this "Configuring System Clock" prob could be indication of this
BIOS problem.

So did some searching based on your suggestion, but I cannot find any reacalls for my model, and this update does not address the issue:

Once I get access to it again in july (It is currently out of the country), I will look into other solutions, including flashing the bios, avoiding saving the system clock....
