PPC Linux

I just got an old mac for $10, I want to install Linux on it.  What's a good PPC linux distro that comes on CDs?  I want something like arch... PS:  I don't have an internet conncetion with that mac, so everything needs to come on a CD set...

Re: PPC Linux

I think the best one is debian for a mac, it is quite fast, off course you will have to use the unstable branch (sid) cos the stable one is useless. Main problem is that you don't have internet connection there but I think there are unstable isos somewhere, sure for i386. If you want just a server the stable branch is a good choise.

Also you could try yellowdog, but I have never used it so no idea how it works...

Re: PPC Linux

you have to be sure whether or not you have an old world mac or a new world mac too. your choices will furhter be decided by this.  if i recall there is information on the apple site with respect to what is old and what is new.

Re: PPC Linux

I've heard good things about Yellow Dog, too.

It's an RPM distro, as opposed to DEB, but it only works on 7500 Macs and later.

Re: PPC Linux

gentoo has a excellently supported PPC branch I believe if you can handle having to compile things. I imagine KDE/gnome would take a good month on that machine  big_smile
