Hi everyone!
In this thread I wonder how Arch is like to run under an application like
VMWare or Virtualbox or similar? Wich is best? and so on.
Why I wonder this is because im thinking of skipping dual boot cause
I recently bought a new rig and Arch wont accept my new network card
(as described in another thread) and at the current state with linux and
games I feel i dont need 3d support in my Arch install so why not run
Arch inside Win where I also can play my games.
I really want Arch cause its the best distro I ever tried and as it is now I cant
install it alone cause the network problem and with Arch internet is really
important.
So the idea is to have Win as main only for games and Arch in a virtual
for all other things.
Is this an bad idea? Is there anyone here who has this setup and like it?
I really appreciate all help and advice I can get
/Thx in advance ![]()
PS. I work at night and now its my sleep time so I maybe not answering right now.

I've currently got Arch running inside VirtualBox under Vista. Going pretty well for me
. VirtualBox still has a few kinks here and there tho. The main annoyance for me is it doesn't resize to fit the virtual desktop properly. It goes most of the way and leaves a scroll bar, there is plenty of room to show the whole lot, but nooooo. lol.

Yes running windows is a bad idea.

Thx for your replies
And yes windows is bad but not for games.
Anyone else?

VMware Arch works fine, didn't do anything special apart from editing the resolution from within VMware (not arch). Cause normally it's set way to big, but that is VMware's problem not arch.

hi,
I have currently Arch running in a Virtual box, hosted in a linux Ubuntu 7.10.
I had some problems initiallly with video resolution, but they disappear as soon as I installed the last non free version of virtual box (1.4.4 afair).
Now, it works fine and smoothly, it is a very good way to test or play with Arch, even if it is not the true hardware.
My next step will be to replace Ubuntu by Arch, and to replace Xfce by Enlighment v17 which seems fairly good.

I've used Arch under both VMWare and Virtualbox, both have had their problems.
Under Vbox the networking will only work by installing the networking driver manually - Vista doesn't have support for the ethernet card Vbox uses as it's default
(I don't now if this has changed by now, probably not).
VMWare Workstation does support the network, even if you use wifi networking, but you need version 6x, none of the 5.5x editions will work right with Vista. I've no idea about VMWare Server.
Also if you experience an extremely slow start up in Vista, remember to add the Vmware/Vbox directory to your antivirus exclusions, or it will try and read the whole virtual image as it scans the system O_o (You'll be there over 5 mins waiting).

I've no idea about VMWare Server.
I was talking about VMWare Server, no problems installing arch and no particolar configurations.

Ah, if I ever have need for VMWare again, I'll be sure to try the Server edition then ![]()
And I found this guide to networking on Virtualbox using a Vista host with a bridged connection, so it looks like that problem maybe solved too.
