Connecting xbox to capture card

I have decided to hook up xbox 360 to my sound system. Since it is right next to my laptop, I thought I would buy 2xRCA(female)->3.5"(male) adapter and plug it into mic slot, so I can adjust capture volume and use it with headphones.

In a nutshell, here's the diagram:

| Output -> Sound system
X
| Input <- 3.5 <- 2xRCA (left and right) <- Xbox

I've brought the adapter home, plugged it in and it all worked. Until I decided to test left and right channels independently, that is.

Strangest thing, one channel seems to be recognized as 'Mic1', other as 'Mic2'. I can jump between them and hear sounds coming from either left or right.

Any way to combine both 'Mics' into one stereo channel? I've done my googling, but to no avail.

EDIT: One RCA wire plugged in, 'silent' mic selected. If I increase mic channel volume and enable +20dB sound boost, I can hear sound actually being produced. Very silently though.
