lost system sounds in Gnome after -Syu

Hi, I'm an Arch newbie of about 8 months and have Arch with Gnome on my 2 boxes and laptop (and loving it).
I've been doing pacman -Syu on all three machines regularly with absolutely no problems.
Yesterday I did -Syu on one of the boxes and the laptop and after rebooting today found that system sounds have stopped working.
On the box that I didn't update, the sounds are working fine.
I notice on THAT box that -Syu shows glib2-2.14.5-1  guile-1.8.3-1  dvd+rw-tools-7.0-4  kernel26-2.6.23.14-1 less-418-1 and xorg-xinit-1.0.7-3 would be the next update. Is it possible that one of these updates could have knocked out system sounds on the other machines that I did update.
I hope this all makes sense. I do like my ear candy. smile
Thanks in advance to you expert detectives.
Regards

edit:- on the box that does have system sounds I tried installing all the above updates individually and none of them knocked out the sounds so I think I'm on the wrong track. ??
