Re: pacman -Qe Broken after today´s "full system upgrade"

Are you expecting -Qe to show orphans? Pacman 3.1.0 changed that to -Qt wink

Re: pacman -Qe Broken after today´s "full system upgrade"

After reading your reply, I checked "man pacman" and it changed as you said!
so I did a "pacman -Qt" to look for orphans and this is the result.

Re: pacman -Qe Broken after today´s "full system upgrade"

Sure enough, I get a similar response to both commands. Try pacman -Qdt, that seems to give me a better list! d for all packages installed as dependencies and t to show only the ones not required by any package smile
To me, it seems like the man page is wrong, or at least misleading.

Hm, which part exactly?

pacman roulette : pacman -S $(pacman -Slq | LANG=C sort -R | head -n $((RANDOM % 10)))

Re: pacman -Qe Broken after today´s "full system upgrade"

(-Qdt is equivalent to the pacman 3.0.X -Qe option.)

pacman -Qdt

docbook-xml 4.5-1
libsigc++2.0 2.1.1-1
lzo 1.08-4
xf86-input-keyboard 1.2.2-2
xf86-input-mouse 1.2.3-1
xf86-video-vesa 1.3.0-5
xorg-xinit 1.0.7-3

I won't remove them till I'm sure if they are true orphans

pacman -Qe worked yesterday, LOL

Sorry for the confusion created, anyhow!

Re: pacman -Qe Broken after today´s "full system upgrade"

at least -Qdt gave me the real orphan packages which is portmap since I removed fam, so I assume it really gives orphans. But, I wouldn't recommend you remove xf86-input-keyboard or xf86-input-mouse unless you don't use a mouse nor a keyboard.

Re: pacman -Qe Broken after today´s "full system upgrade"

I couldn't help testing pacman's abilities, so I removed everything listed by "pacman -Qdt"
including xf86-input-keyboard and xf86-input-mouse
Couldn't type anything in "Slim" to login :-(
So I booted a puppylinux Frugal install and removed "slim" from the daemons in rc.conf, rebooted in to Archlinux
and reinstalled the keyboard and the mouse. now everything seems ok!

I did a "pacman -Qdt" just to check and neither xf86-input-keyboard or xf86-input-mouse, apeared now as orphans???
I have no orphans now.

If I removed anything vital, pls let me know.

Re: pacman -Qe Broken after today´s "full system upgrade"

I'd keep all those x* packages you removed. I think the reason that pacman -Qdt listed those is that some time ago there was a dummy package named "xorg" which pulled in all those packages as dependencies. That "xorg" package was removed further on, leaving "orphans" behind (which should not be orphans though).

Re: pacman -Qe Broken after today´s "full system upgrade"

I would not have removed any of the xorg / xf86 packages.
This problem was likely caused by the xorg meta package -> xorg transition that happened a while ago. So these packages are not really orphans, it's just a side effect of the transition.

Edit : oh no, bender owned me..

Sure enough, I get a similar response to both commands. Try pacman -Qdt, that seems to give me a better list! d for all packages installed as dependencies and t to show only the ones not required by any package smile
To me, it seems like the man page is wrong, or at least misleading.

Hm, which part exactly?

 -e, --explicit
List all packages explicitly installed. This option can be combined
with -t to list top-level packages- those packages that were
explicitly installed but are not required by any other package.
(-Qet is equivalent to the pacman 2.9.X -Qe option.)

I was thinking this part, but I had missed the "2.9.X". I cannot remember what -Qe did before 3.0 -- so i am probably wrong! Sorry smile

Ah ok, that's what I guessed, but I wasn't sure at all. Indeed. the 2.9 Qe option was a bit strange smile

Re: pacman -Qe Broken after today´s "full system upgrade"

Noticed a few strange thinks not working ie.- "gksu" guess needs xorg-xauth

[2008-01-17 19:45] installed xf86-input-mouse (1.2.3-1)
[2008-01-17 19:45] installed xf86-input-keyboard (1.2.2-2)
[2008-01-18 01:14] installed xorg-xauth (1.0.2-1)
[2008-01-18 01:15] installed xorg-xinit (1.0.7-3)
[2008-01-18 01:17] installed lzo (1.08-4)
[2008-01-18 01:17] installed libsigc++2.0 (2.1.1-1)
[2008-01-18 01:18] installed docbook-xml (4.5-1)

xf86-video-vesa is the only one I didn't reinstall.

did a "pacman -Qdt" afterwards, and guess what, it didn't return anything. roll

The answer is in the FM, so RTFM!

..

lol

>>> see, they're different! explicitly installed and real orphans, hard to notice? please diff -Naur them! <<<

-d, --deps
List all packages installed as dependencies. This option can be combined with -t for listing real orphans- packages that were installed as dependencies
but are no longer required by any installed package. (-Qdt is equivalent to the pacman 3.0.X -Qe option.)

-t, --orphans
Restrict or filter output to packages not required by any currently installed package.
