I have this college class that forces me to use MS office 2003 and I was wondering if openoffice can make a compatible file so that I can interoperate between the two. I noticed that I can save a file as a office 2003 xml file but I don't know if this is what I want or not.

I that would work. Or you can just save it as a .doc and you should be reasonably fine... Thats what I end up doing.

Xml and doc should both be fine. I do a lot of writing for people who use MS Office 2003 or earlier versions, never had a problem. Mind you, this is just text with the usual formatting (paragraphs, fonts, etc), not really complex stuff.
