FBSplash

Hi All,
I've been looking at FBSPLASH and Gensplash the last couple of days however i can't seem to get it to work on boot. From what i can work out because i have a newer patch i need to use FBSPLASH which i can get working on a standard console,

Anyhows i was just wondering if anyone here has much luck with it i'm going try and get it working tonight when i get out of work smile

thing i've tried so far
I have the FBCONDECOR patch against stock kernel source.
I have tryied the AUR entry for FBSPLASH however bits are missing like the fbinstall.script
downloaded the source fron the gentoo developers and compiled it... that gave me the abbility to theme a console with out any problems
so far i have stolen the hook from gensplash package and used it with the fbsplash sources that all works okay.

I have the Grub line set up with the splash blah blah etc

only thing i have noticed is that the kernel doesn't output any error messages or anything for fbcondecor it's almost like it doesn't exists.
the etc/rc.d/gensplash script isn't working at all (think i might look into that tonight)

any ideas or has anyone got it working.

Thanks
Matthew

Re: FBSplash

Hi,

I took over fbsplash Package on AUR some days ago because it was orphaned. I am writing new scripts and hope to get it work in the next few days! smile

That's great to hear! I've been hoping to get a good bootsplash (splashy hasn't been working for me..) without having to patch the kernel.

I thought fbsplash/gensplash needed a patched kernel?  I don't think what's needed is included in the Arch's default kernel is it?

Re: FBSplash

Fbsplash doesn't need a kernel patch anymore since some time. It's completly in userspace. There is a kernel patch, that you can use, if you like a background image on the ttys and a splash from the beginning and not from initramfs. It's called fbcondecor. I hope I can upload all that stuff in the next few days...

Re: FBSplash

I was going by the Gensplash wiki.. it says  "fbsplash is not in the standard kernel tree".. well I guess that needs updating smile

Re: FBSplash

$ pacman -Ss fbsplash
community/gensplash 1.4.2.1-1
Utilties to enable framebuffer splash screens and console backgrounds using
the fbsplash kernel patch. Includes the darch splash theme.

Is there going to be an actual "fbsplash" package?

/etc/rc.d/ is where daemons reside. Beware.

Not meaning to press you -- in fact I am very happy that you took over the package at all --, but are you also going to take care of the
"sysctl table check failed: /kernel/fbcondecor .1.77 Unknown sysctl binary path" error mentioned in this thread? Or is that something something that should be fixed elsewhere? (I have only discovered that error message in the logs a few minutes ago.)

Re: FBSplash

The gensplash package is out of date since some time! Related to that, also the wiki is out of date. Gensplash was renamed to fbsplash and the kernel patch is now called fbcondecor. This patch isn't needed, if you don't need a background on the ttys or a splash from the early beginning, because the fbsplash daemon runs in user space...
Since gensplash was renamed to fbsplash, there is a new package in AUR, that is called fbsplash. It is at the moment also out of date and I take it over. I will change this situation soon. I'm a little bit busy these days. Probably the up to date package already fixes the problem, if not, I will do my best to solve the problem. smile

Cheers,
dongiovanni

Re: FBSplash

had a first try, too, but couldn't compile due to some problem with klibc-zen (which corresponds to kernel26zen-git, which I am on (and which has fbcondecor patch included)). I'll re-try when I have more time to dig deeper.

Thanks a lot so far already

Re: FBSplash

I guess It should depend on 'initscripts-splash' from community repo, otherwise, with core/initscripts installed, the progressbar won't work and neither will /etc/rc.d/fbsplash (since it checks for splash_check function which is provided by initscripts-splash). Or at least it should inform that without these packages progressbar and background setting will not work.
Other then that - GREAT WORK! Thanks!

Re: FBSplash

I forgot initscipts-splash as dependency wink. It's now fixed. I will write more documentation soon!

@awagner: I also get the error message you get. I will have a deeper look at it.

You don't happen to be involved with the considerations to provide generic hooks (à la /etc/rc.d/functions.d/*)  in initscripts and can tell us the state of the discussion?
(I suppose you're aware of Bug Reports/Feature Requests  #6989 and #8689, right?)

Re: FBSplash

Why can not initscripts-splashy be merged with initscripts official package? This way things would be simpler.

Re: FBSplash

There is/was already a discussion about it! AFAIK there would be a generic hook system in the scripts, if it will realy be implemented!
