xorg ati driver buggy ...

Hello,

I wanted to plug my old laptop in an external LCD monitor.
After playing around with xrandr, I came to the conclusion that the driver (or xrandr ?) is buggy.
In fact I cannot turn off my laptop panel and choose a high (or even low) resolution on the external screen.
The only thing I achieved was a clone mode, by turning off then on again the laptop panel ...

If nobody has a clue of how to fix that, I would like to compile an older version of the ati-driver.
Does somebody has some experience ?
re-building the current version with abs did'n't succeed (I mean the building process).
