strange esd happenings

My Gnome System/preferences/sound/sounds only work if I restart the daemon after every boot.
They work when I test them in the above panel but not as they are supposed to do when issuing different commands in general work.
I have the esd daemon set in rc.conf.
They used to work OK.
I have been doing my normal pacman -Syu for 9 months without any problems.
I wonder if it could be related to that? It happened on my box and laptop at the same time.
I love my ear candy and would appreciate any help.
Is there a way to set esd in the xinit/xinitrc file? Just Noob guessing.
