XDM theming problem

Hi, I'm messing around with XDM, trying to make a simple theme for it. I've run into two minor problems, and i can't seem to get around them.

1. I would like to add shutdown and reboot buttons to it. I nabbed some code from archlinux-xdm that uses an xmessage to make the buttons. The buttons appear and work fine, but the xmessage persists on log in. The file Xsetup_0 creates the xmessage, and the file Xstartup attempts to `killall xmessage`, but it doesn't seem to work. Does anyone have any ideas?
2. This is minor: I would like to change the password prompt, but apparently xlogin*passwdPrompt is overwritten by PAM's prompt. Does anyone know how to change PAM's prompt?

Thanks for any help.
