thunar freezes, regularily

will try to open it in terminal, and give more detailed error messages, but am running a video converter, so can't do it now.

Thunar freezes, and blanks.  Unable to close window, or quit.

[ryan@Archbox fam]$ thunar -q
Thunar: Failed to terminate running instance: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

may simply be cpu overload.

cpu is at 95%, 88% used by  mencoder.  But top shows no thunar....but window reminents are still there.  unable to start a second instance of thunar.

well, having rebooted after my cpu usage droped to normal <10%...I haven't had a single problem, so I am guessing it just crapped out do to cpu over use.

I'm not sure if this is related to your problem, but Thunar has problems with fam. There are repeatable things that can be done that lock Thunar up. Thunar's devs are aware of this. If you do have fam running, replace it with gamin. It doesn't lock up nearly as much. If you do this, remove fam from the daemons line in rc.conf; It won't be necessary anymore.

really...yup fam is definately running!

Advantages of gamin over fam, does it fill all of fams business?

Yes. It's a fork of fam. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better. You'll still get lockups occasionally. Particularly if you switch hidden files off and on a lot. If you're bored, go look at Thunar's bug tracker sometime.

Thunar's devs are using fam because it exists on a bunch of different platforms. It doesn't need fam, but it uses it to refresh the file view.
