xgl not starting on an xfce with ati proprietary.

I have an ati x1900xt on xfce and i have installed xgl.however when i give the command

#startxgl 1 xfce ati

in order to test how the xgl is working, I always get a black screen with a little watch unstoppably...this means that xgl is not loaded or some modules must be not...dont you think? can anybody help me anyhow in this and can anybody help me find where the error that comes is, so that I can post it here?
