glest incredibly slow

I just ran another update so everything is fresh, and thought I would give glest a try.  I can't even get past the main menu!  It is so sluggish, the mouse cursor jumps around seemingly at random... I turned off 3d shading and that did not help.  Before I file it as a bug on the glest site, I thought I would see if anyone here has run it successfully.

Hardware is an ati radeon 7000, amd sempron 3100+ running at 1.7Ghz, 512MB RAM.  glxinfo tells me the server version is 1.2 and the client version is 1.4, and direct rendering is enabled.  glxgears shows me fps of about 300 - not spectacular, but at least smooth enough and fast enough for a low-budget hobby machine.

Tuxracer, my other benchmark for GL rendering, works perfectly fine... when dri is not working properly ol' tux will behave the same sluggish way, but currently he's zooming down the hill faster than I can keep up with him.

I cannot find any other options either from the setup menu or glest.ini that might affect performance, other than 3d shading which as I mentioned is turned off.

Is there anything else I should try, any more information I need to provide?  Does anyone else here use an old radeon and are you able to get glest to work right?
