Strange network problem [solved]

Hello everybody.

I am new to archlinux and set up my arch64-box a few days ago. With the help of the "Beginner's Guide", the Wiki and this very Forum (many thanks to all the contributers!!) everything is working smoothly.

Just one thing is weird. I can not connect to specific domains like "www.google.com" or "www.en.wikipedia.org". Besides these my internet connection works perfectly.

When I ping "www.google.de" I get "unknown host", pinging "www.google.com" I get ping statistics for "http://www.l.google.com/" and they are fast as they should.
When I ping "www.en.wikipedia.org" I again get the "unknown host" line. Doing ping "wikipedia.org" however works.
In my browser I can open "http://www.l.google.com/" and "http://wikipedia.org/" even so the latter is extremely slow but I neither can I open "http://www.google.de", "http://www.google.com/" nor "http://en.wikipedia.org/".

Strange, isn't it?!

I set up my network according to the Wiki-article as dhcp. Because I followed all the recommendations (Beginner's Guide, Wiki etc.) I think/hope the conf.-files should be correct.

My other (dual-boot) sidux-system has no internet problems of the sort.
Any ideas or recommendations are very much appreciated.

regards
a new lucky and at the same time despaired archlinux user big_smile

Re: Strange network problem [solved]

/etc/resolv.conf

# Generated by dhcpcd for interface eth0
nameserver 192.168.1.1

192.168.1.1 is the IP-address of my router.

Re: Strange network problem [solved]

I had a similar problem with a D-Link 624GST router.

This device didn't have IPv6 support before the all-new firmware. I suggest you to update, but be warned, it breaks the wireless support and I'm still trying to fix this.
If you prefer to operate with IPv4, the main problem is that many applications doesn't care that the ipv6 modules are disabled, they still send AAA dns requests. To correct the problem, add this to your /etc/rc.conf :

 MOD_BLACKLIST=(ipv6 net-pf-10)

Then, change the resolv.conf to use public DNS (or direct DNS provided by you ISP).
In France, you can use the Neuf Telecom DNS that are public,

nameserver 212.30.96.108
nameserver 213.203.124.146

As DHCP regularly updates resolv.conf, you will have to forget dhcpcd and prefer netcfg and network-profiles.
