GRUB error 15

Computer with two internal hard drives. Currently have Ubuntu on sda, and according to fstab -l Windows is on hda. However when I run the Arch install disk it shows, my 160gb hd (the one containing Ubuntu) as sda, and my WD external drive as sdb, and does not seem to even see the Windows drive. Which is a new issue, because Ive attempted to install Arch on this machine before I had the external and it has always seen the Windows drive. However my issue is this, I go through the Arch install as usual, GRUB as a bootloader of course. After I configure everything and reboot I get this....

GRUB loading stage 1.5
Grub loading please wait...
Error 15

This leaving my system unbootable with any system. I installed GRUB on the MBR of /dev/sda during the Arch install. Ive checked through the menu.lst file for GRUB and am not sure where my error is, but I'm sure it lies in this file somehow. I then ran the Ubuntu 7.10 live cd again, and everything is back to normal, GRUB loads fine, and I can boot into both Windows and Linux.

I've tried several times to get Arch going on this setup and have failed each of them. I'm on the verge of giving up as I'm not sure what to do. I really don't want to give up on Arch as it is the best OS I've ever used, and fastest. So if anyone has ANY suggestions, they are welcomed and appreciated.

HELP!!!! hahaha

Re: GRUB error 15

I don't know if it can be of any help but here is my /boot/grub/menu.lst from Ubuntu ( the one that works). I would think it should need to be basically the same thing for Arch, although I was under the impression that root on Arch when using auto prepare should be (hd0,0) well for Ubuntu as well, as sda seems to be my Linux hd. Maybe I'm not quite understanding the partition naming used by GRUB.

title Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
root (hd1,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=97254b58-e893-49c4-9f$
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic
quiet

title Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic (recovery mode)
root (hd1,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=97254b58-e893-49c4-9f$
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic

title Ubuntu 7.10, memtest86+
root (hd1,0)
kernel /boot/memtest86+.bin
quiet

### END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST

# This is a divider, added to separate the menu items below from the Debian
# ones.
title Other operating systems:
root

# This entry automatically added by the Debian installer for a non-linux OS
# on /dev/hda1
title Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
root (hd0,0)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1

Oh...and although when I get ready to prepare my hd the Windows hd does not show as an option for that, it does show in /boot/grub/menu.lst when installing grub

I don't understand. You have two harddrives you say, but while the installer recognizes two: sda and sdb, you state it doesn't recognize your windows drive, so what's on sdb then?

Anyway, grub error 15 means it can't find the correct files if I'm not mistaken so that could mean filepaths and partition locations like: hda(0,0) etc... maybe sda should be hda (sda=sata right? do you use sata drives?)
Also error 15 stage 1,5 could mean you'll have to change some BIOS boot order settings. Try changing bootorder from floppy, cd etc...

Hope you can get behind this... I had this grub error while trying to install gobolinux... I ended up using the Ubuntu  menu.lst. You could always just copy that using a lifecd. Modify the ubuntu settings (names and stuff) to arch's should work.

Re: GRUB error 15

Thanks for the help. I have the issue fixed. Dumb mistake on my part. GRUB was installed on the MBR of sda (my linux hd), but there was an existing grub on the windows hd, because Ubuntu intalled it there. The issue was that I had the machine trying to boot from the Windows driver therefore still trying to use the bootloader that was installed by Ubuntu...sdb btw was my external hard drive. But I have two internals, plus the external.

My issue now however is X will not start. It tells me "Fatal error: no screens found" or something along those lines. I imagine the issue lies in xorg.conf, but I havent edited anything in the file except for the video driver. The defaults generated when using hwd -x are usually fine for me, however this is the first time I got Arch succesfully installed on this machine. Im trying to get a copy of xorg.conf for you guys, as Im sure it would help, but Im on the same machine (the only one I have) on an Ubuntu live cd, and I cant get the partition where Arch is installed to mount.

Re: GRUB error 15

You'll notice the first resolution listed under all depths in the screen section is "1268x1024", this was a noob error on my part as it was 3 am when I did that, and I wasnt paying attention I guess. *feels really dumb* However I believe GNOME defaults to 1024x768, until you change it, so I dont think that is the issue. But maybe so. In any event...here's my xorg.conf.

Re: GRUB error 15

I'm not that of an expert on xorg.conf but the

screen  --->0<----  "Screen0" 0 0

looks a bit awkward to me.... try deleting that roll
I think you should try autoconf xorg.conf via

X -configure

too.... When I installed arch, that one performed better then hwd -x.
succes wink

the zero is completely normal, I have never not seen it there. No matter what distribution I used.
