When I run pidgin I have sounds.
If I start an audio player or mplayer, sounds are stopped on pidgin.
If I stop the application, then pidgin has sound again.
I have set the sound to "automatic" in pidgin, as it seems not to work with "alsa".
I there a way to make it work ?
Any dea ?
Thanks,

I think I am having kind of the same problem, when I play music in XMMS, firefox sounds dont work (like youtube videos).
Only after I close xmms and then restart firefox, sound will play.
Oops, I just changed the output plugin of xmms to alsa and all is well.

Sounds like you need dmix. http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/All … nd_at_once
I still don't understand it quite well though, but after some trial and error you should get it to work. I know I did, I just wouldn't remember what the hell I did exactly to make it work

Thanks for the pointer. I am a bit lost however, there is no dmix package, and I am not sure which package should be installed. I tried soundmixer , but the config file is far from the wiki description.

Dmix is part of alsa, it's not a seperate package. You set it up using the /etc/asound.conf or ~/.asoundrc file. Look up info on these files and you will find what you need.
