mpd [ncmpc] freezes after a few seconds

a clean install of ncmpc will play a song from my playlist for about 3 seconds and then become unresponsive.
the log files /var/log/mpd/mpd.error & /var/log/mpd/mpd.log are both empty.

MPD_HOST is set to "127.0.0.1" and ifconfig reports loopback is working
MPD_PORT is set to "6600" and env reports these are both correct

alsa is working and aplay -l gives me good card feedback

the only guess i have is a problem connecting to localhost? every so often ncmpc will tell me it is "Connecting to localhost... [Press q to abort]" in the bottom left hand side.

does anyone here have any clue?

my machine is an apple powerbook g4 titanium model "onyx"

I had the exact same problem when I was trying to stream music from Jamendo, which I don't think relates a lot to your case. A patch fixed that, you might give it a try anyway, just have a look at this post.
