I'm getting this same conflict too for some reason with the aur packages, it was working again after pacman 3.1.1 and installing the aur packages, but I got this error today and thought it was just the -ubuntu packages that I installed yesterday, but error remained with the -lcd packages after I switched back to it.

Don't reinstall the old package (i.e. /var/cache/pacman/pkg/), *recompile*, with makepkg -fi
And pay attention to this line:

the cairo-lcd from the community-repos conflicts too, so it isn't an AUR problem

Thank you, edited the pkgbuild and made sure the pkgver number was correct and conflict finally went away.
I might've made a typo the first time when I compiled it with "cairo=$pkgver", it didn't seem to work so I used 'cairo=1.5.8' instead (installed 1.5.8 since 1.5.6 gave me 404 error), all is fine now.

That's probably because gtk2 depens on cairo>=1.4.14 .
cairo is at 1.4.14 version, but cairo-lcd is still at 1.4.12, so it should be updated also.
pacman roulette : pacman -S $(pacman -Slq | LANG=C sort -R | head -n $((RANDOM % 10)))

Seems like you are talking about cairo-ubuntu, right?
This package had "cairo $pkgver" which didn't work anymore.
brebs just fixed it by changing to "cairo=$pkgver" , and also bumped it to 1.5.8.
(ps to brebs : sorry, I flagged the package out of date _after_ you updated it, I forgot to refresh the page. I unflagged it right away).
I don't know why "cairo=$pkgver" didn't work for you, maybe you should try again
(You can check with pacman -Qip cairo-ubuntu*.pkg.tar.gz)

My eyes are yet to find the difference between the -lcd packages (cairo and libxft) and the regular ones. I have been using the -lcd packages but replaced them as of this current event, but I can't seem to notice the difference. And yes I have a ViewSonic 1940W which is LCD wide screen.

I guess it stops making a difference at higher resolutions. For me the difference is night and day on all the monitors I use (the highest resolution is 1280x1024 with 96dpi.
EDIT: Removed the PKGBUILD since the package has been updated in AUR/community.
