Backup Arch install, need to move to other HD

Hey guys I have checked this site: http://inferno.slug.org/cgi-bin/wiki?Dr … nd_Cloning

However it states that the method is for backing up one boot partition and one data partition, but my current setup is just / and /home on separate partitions. How exactly would I copy/move my / partition over to a new HD so I can start using it from the new one???

Thx for any help smile

Go into liveCD.
mount you partitions on somewhere.
tar partitions.
mv tar files or burn them.

Create new partitions and extract content from tar files.

Big chance that after restore from backups your grub will be in not wery good conditions so you will have to fix it.

Okay, could I use the Arch CD I burnt?

And if I tar'd the / partition, for example, would it maintain all permissions? And do I need to tar the whole root?

Re: Backup Arch install, need to move to other HD

The guide you've posted in your first post is as easy as it gets -- you just have to understand what happens at each stage and not just cut cut and paste commands.  I've used it many times and no, my setup is not like the setup in the guide but it's very easy to make the necessary adjustments so that the method fits my system.  One thing you should keep in mind though is that arch calls all hard drives sd* regardless of whether they are sata or ata and other live cds (and the guide) might use the hd* notation for ata drives.

Yes, you could use the Arch cd as a live/rescue cd, but it's not the best choice, especially if you need graphical partitioning tools available.

If you follow the directions in the guide the tar commands given theme make sure that all permissions are kept intact.

Just put in the new hard drive, make the partitions and "cp -a" the contents of your current partitions to the new ones. I've done this myself and it works flawlessly.
