I upgraded nvidia and nvidia-utils yesterday to the current nvidia-utils 169.09-2 and nvidia-utils 169.09-1 versions respectively. Pacman complained about the presence of /usr/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1, so I followed the advice here (http://archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-gen … 16508.html) and did a -Sf installation. After that the installation and restart (I upgraded the kernel at the same time), went smoothly.
I run icewm, but boot to the console and start X manually. I tend to drop back into the console (ctl+alt+f1) fairly regularly. The X-server has now begun to catch Sig 11 and segfault (unpredictably), when I go to the console. It has happened three times today - the Xorg log terminates with :
Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x7e) [0x80baf4e]
1: [0xb7f0f420]
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting
Any ideas please?

Don't have this problem here (8500GT board) after the nvidia ugprade. Pacman complained here too about /usr/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1 , but in my case I removed nvidia-utils with pacman -Rd before upgrading to correct the issue.
For information purposes: I'm using lastest Xorg (composite enabled) and KDEmod. Also, I'm not booting with a fb enabled console (vga=7xx on Grub).

Thank-you for responding freakcode. All feedback helps.
I am not using a fb enabled console either.
It probably would have been a good idea for me to remove the existing nvidia-utils. libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1 is, however, now a symlink to libXvMCNVIDIA.so.169.09 - which I assume to be correct.
After a couple of occasions when I was able to go to the console without crashing the X Server, it happened again when I tested a moment ago.

Same problem here.
I had upgraded the nvidia and nvidia-utils, at the beginning i got the infamous /usr/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1, ok i deleted it, then the syslink /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so was not properly linked, ok i linked it (using the nvidia built-in), now i get almost the same of perseus
Backtrace:

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server abortingI also tried deactivating the glx and the composite modules, also tried with the Xorg libwfb.so, uninstalling the nvidia drivers with -Rd and removing /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so and installing the driver again, using nvidia-xconfig, doing depmod -a, but without luck.
P.D. If i use another x driver like "nv" or "vesa", it works fine.

Sorry to hear of your problem Faxandu, but it nice to know its not just me.
On the subject of libwfb.so, I have :
2008-02-10 20:13 libwfb.so -> /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libnvidia-wfb.so.169.09
and
2008-02-03 14:59 libwfb.so.1.4
Does anyone know if the last of these should be deleted?

Ohh, I have the same issue too, my only workaround was downgrading at least until I find a solution. ![]()

My Xorg is crashing too, upgraded yesterday and WoW under Wine makes my X crash(sometimes).

I'm having the exact same problem as everyone here. After the new kernel / nvidia update last night, I could no longer boot into any login managers and/or console ... when I get home, I guess I'll downgrade both the kernel and nvidia for now. Can anyone provide some insight to this problem?

I'm posting here the setup of my /usr/lib/xorg/modules so you guys can see if there's a difference from removing the old package on the update or deleting the files by hand.

Thank-you very much freakcode.
My directory is identical to yours - files, sizes and the symlink.

In another post of the forums someone had luck installing the drivers via the nvidia installer

Well I have not found one so far. I posted a question on the nVidia forum ("Sig 11 on swtiching from X to console"), and comp.os.linux.x, but with no real progress.
There was a response to the nVidia post from someone who said that he was going to file an nVidia bug report, but I am not at all sure that his problem - or that the problems of everyone who has posted here - are the same as mine, or as each-other's. There seem to be variations on a theme. In my case the problem is intermittent (I can sometimes go to the console without problems five or six times before it hits), and after X crashes my console is still perfectly usable - I can carry out any console task. If I type startx in that same console, X comes back up. That does not seem to be the case for everyone.
I thought at one point that it might be related to ACPI, but using Option "ConnectToAcpid" "false" in my xorg.conf did not help.
I am not very expert, but the changelogs for the nVidia driver, Xorg and kernel, don't offer any clues.
At present I really need this box to be up 24/7 - so my own scope for experimentation is limited. I just sit and hope that some update will soon fix things - I am not very optimistic that it will.

Yesterday I upgraded nvidia and nvidia-utils to the version 169.12-1 from testing and kernel to the version 2.6.24.3-1. Now I can switch to virtual consoles (Ctrl+Alt+Fn) without any problem.

Thanks for that.
I upgraded to that kernel version yesterday when it went mainstream. No cure for my problems, so maybe the magic is in the Utils.

Still have this problem. with 169.12 too. maybe it's related with hal support for pointer devices, and with changing to console, devices get turned off, and then X crashes... I really don't know, but the problem is annoying especially when I want to suspend or hibernate, because after resume there is login screen only, because X crashed while before suspend.

Now I have the same problem.... I released that all opengl programs drops SIGSEGV.... I've tried gdb on one of them and it said this:
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
[Switching to Thread 0xb5cd0910 (LWP 7980)]
0xb5d4c45a in _nv000000gl () from /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1
When I install libgl, it conflicts with nvidia-utils, and when I althought proceed instalation, I get all OpenGL programs to work... but I doesn't solve problem with crashing X11 with nvidia driver...
so evidently there is the problem with nvidia-utils (it's what someone mentioned here before), but I'm not so good to figure it out unfortunately....
Hope there will be bug fix soon.... ![]()
thx, bye

Just to confirm in response to patok and others, that I still have the original problem after all recent upgrades.
Hope there will be bug fix soon....
Amen to that
