Ok well im a MAJOR newb when it comes to torrent downloads and stuff and know almost nothing about networking adn all fo whatever that goes with it. As of right now i just reinstalled arch and am trying to download stuff via Ktorrent, but my download speed caps off at around 3 kb/s... What would i have to do to increase this speed to get it up to my max? My computer is hooked up to an ethernet cable that runs into a "box" in my basement, lol im REALLY REALLY srry i know nothing about any of this, but i really need to learn and i feel this is a good way to start. It's really kinda embarassing lol...

have you forwarded the proper ports?

I've not used that specific prog. but I had the same problems due to firewalls on campus, then i discovered Deluge - its gtk and it comes out of the box with the proper encryption settings now I plug into the lan jacks in the library and have 300mb files downloaded in an hour or so . .
as I understand the problem ISP's (such as the one my school uses) are filtering P2P traffic and bottlenecking it on perpose - some torrent clients allow options for encrypting your data stream - it takes more out of your cpu - had trouble configuring it with other cliens like azures (which after this new version I hate!) but Deluge did the trick for me . . . might be worth trying at the least - if that doesnt work, well start lobbying, protesting, and petitioning to keep Net Nutrality!
Hell do that last part anyway

I use KTorrent and I know that it's one of, if not the best torrenting program for linux. So KTorrent is not your problem.
Forwarding ports would probably help you although you really shouldn't have to with torrents...Your torrent that you're trying to download might not have very many/ very good seeders, or might have too many leechers.
The "box" is probably either a router or modem. Did you get the box from your internet service provider?
Open a terminal and paste the output of:
netstat -r
Also: Who is your internet service provider? (Comcast, Verizon, AT&T, etc...)

Haha, I'll admit, that didn't help me like I thought it would...
I'm sorry, I'm not an expert at linux yet so I make mistakes.
I forgot to add a flag to the command I gave you.
Here's what I should have said:
netstat -rn
Where it says "dslrouter" above there will end up being an ip address.
Put that ip address in your internet browser (konqueror, firefox, etc...) and you will be prompted for a username and password.
I hope you know those, but if you don't, you might be able to find them online. Let me know if you don't know them.

are you on a college network?
try forwarding the proper ports and then download a popular linux iso that is guaranteed to have plenty of seeders. see what your speeds are.
also, try enabling encryption. you should *always* have encryption enabled even if you dont need it yourself.
if you have the proper ports forwarded, have configured ktorrent properly, and use a torrent with plenty of seeders, you should have high speeds. if not, your bandwidth is most likely capped by your ISP and there is little you can do about it besides using a secure VPN.

Ok, try this:
Enter admin for the username.
Enter password for the password.

My internet service provider is Verizon
Verizon is known for blocking P2P. You may not be able to do anything here.

nope didn't work, that's bullshit, how can they bllock p2p... Is that legal? I had no idea they could do that...

It's legal, probably in the contract you signed.
If Verizon is throttling packages (blocking p2p) I think that there's a way around it.
I've heard that if you use encryption in a torrenting program like azerus, (KTorrent doesn't support it) it will somehow increase the download speeds.
Do some research on it. I've never had to do it before.
Fortunately Torrenting is legal, but the content that most people torrent is not.
Although I don't think that that is your problem. My friend has verizon, and he torrents like crazy all of the time.
Try finding a better torrent with more seeders and downloading that.

I get great download speeds in frostwire though, would that mean anything? If they are seriouse about what is on that site, it's time for a move to a new isp...
Offline
I never followed up on this case until right now, and it seems that Verizon backed off for the moment. So yes, keep trying until you get something working:

Great download speeds in limewire does say something. It says something good.
Ya, I would say try a different torrent.
Offline
ktorrent does in fact support encryption.
I think it's more of a configuration problem or a bad seeding problem rather than your ISP throttling or sandvining your bandwidth.
opeth115@ try what I posted before...and let us know your results.

I have to agree. I also use Verizon, I have the same router. I have my ports forwarded correctly. Using rtorrent with pretty much default settings. No problems at all.

I'm on the same boat. I'm a total no0b with torrents. That's why I've let KTorrent handle everything and remain a total no0b.
I need real, proper pen and paper for this.

the court case you are linking to is over their wireless network, which is cell phone based internet. U use home/landline wireless networking. What he has set up in his house is dsl which is through the phone line(land line).
