[SOLVED -- for me, at least] pcmanfm-0.3.5.8-1 segmentation fault

No other info provided in the terminal window. Anyone else having this problem or is it just me?

Thanks,

Yes, I have had the same experience. A google search will reveal this is fairly common. In the one distro where I've seen it work (TinyMe from PCLinuxOS) it was mentioned that it had to be patched. Apparently the Arch version hasn't been patched.

Thanks for the info, jbromley!

Hopefully someone who knows how to do this "patching" will do it soon (hint, hint) for those of us who really like pcmanfm, but don't know beans about "patching" other than its application to old clothes... tongue

In the interim I have downgraded to the previous package.

I don't have the same experience...

I can use pcmanfm normally, only when mounting volumes with hal (via doubleclicking in the sidebar) it segfaults.

We can't stop here! This is bat country!!

Re: [SOLVED -- for me, at least] pcmanfm-0.3.5.8-1 segmentation fault

I followed up on jbromley's use of Google and found a tip that seems to have solved my problem (although I only did a few quick trial tests of the new pacmanfm and not an exhaustive set of trials). The tip was to create a directory named Desktop in your home directory. I did that and now the new version 0.3.5.8-1 seems to work!

It seems that if you use certain WMs (such as fluxbox, which I use) you do not have a ~/Desktop directory, but that some other WMs (as I recall, Gnome and KDE were mentioned) automatically create this. Why this causes pcmanfm to crash upon startup remains (for me) a mystery, but I can live with the solution...

Hope that this "trick" works for others who have this problem!

Dr.U

Hey, thanks! I use ion3 as a window manager, so I don't have a Desktop directory. I created one and what do you know, pcmanfm works. I am still looking for a file manager, so I'll put pcmanfm through its paces and see how it goes. Thanks again, I'm not sure how I missed this tip.

Re: [SOLVED -- for me, at least] pcmanfm-0.3.5.8-1 segmentation fault

No problem, jbromley! Glad I could help you.

However, I just checked (i.e. did a system upgrade with pacman) and there is now a new pcmanfm-0.3.5.9 available. I installed it, started fluxbox, deleted my ~/Desktop directory and tried to start the new pcmanfm. And guess what?

No problems!!  cool

Thanks to whoever reacted so quickly and prepared a package of the new pcmanfm version! The Archlinux community is really great!

BTW, jbromley, pcmanfm is my favorite FM because of its speed, multiple panes and the "open terminal in current directory" features. Enjoy it!
