Doh, shame on me , I did install catalyst-utils but forgot to update catalyst. It works fine now with compiz-fusion. compiz-fusion-git fails though, but that's another business, and sounds totally unrelated to the catalyst driver.

I installed compiz using the way you described and it worked right away.
But there are some screen glitches at times... Pixels that dont get updated and remain on your desktop until something new happens.
I couldnt get Video to work at all so far, even though I experimented with different video outputs.

I can't find them neither in community, testing, unstable or AUR...

Did you use ATI installer to install it on ARCH ??

You can get an older catalyst package (8.01) from the AUR, and then change the PKGBUILD. You need to change the _pkgver to 8.02.

I only found kernel-optimized packages so i edited scripts to delete the (i.e.) "-fbcondecor" and changed "pkgver" to 8.02 and "_installerver" to 8-02.
The problem is that the "catalyst-utils>=8.02" dependency is not met... How could I get catalyst-utils 8.02 ??

Hi,
in order to get catalyst-utils you have to get the PKGBUILD for catalyst-utils which can be found in /var/abs/extra/modules/catalyst (provided you installed abs) and there you have to modify pkgver to pkgver=8.02. Then run makepkg -g >>PKGBUILD and makepkg should work. Afterwards get it installed with pacman -U catalyst-utils*.tar. That should enable you to build catalyst. The PKGBUILD for catalyst can be found in the same location mentioned above. Modify it run makepkg -g >>PKGBUILD and it should work as well.

I had not understood right how abs worked, which is now done after reading more carefully and thinking a bit

Thanks for your help guys, now compiz-fusion is working smooth and fine on my laptop with X.org core v1.4 !!
The new ati driver fixes the slow scrolling in Firefox using compiz-fusion !! Finally a "good" ATI driver for Linux ? I hadn't test everything yet...

there are some warning because it generate some links to /usr/lib/libGL.so .... and these files don't exist until you install the package (pacman -U)

some news...

I've done some tests to make work videos.

if you disable TexturedVideo VLC works great and Mplayer
works too in fullscreen mode with gl output video. One more thing: VLC video follows the cube while it's rotating even in fullscreen; mplayer don't.

The problem is that in this way it needs a lot of cpu...

I'm running compiz-fusion with the opensource driver. I've lost 40FPS. I could not get AIGLX nor XGL to work with the ATI driver.

Well, an update, i got it to work using:

LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true compiz --replace

using indirect rendering means im not getting all the performance i should get right?

I am experiencing one more problem with these drivers. In BigDesktop mode open-gl apps don't go full screen totally on the external monitor. They simply draw correctly to approximately two thirds of the monitor and not further. My monitors are 1680x1050 and 1280x1024. I had experienced this on previous driver versions too.
Anyone else experiencing this? I am not missing a xorg.conf option perhaps?

Well, it worked using indirect rendering. Accordingly with this guide: http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/ATI_with_AIGLX it should be like that.

Well, accordingly with this guide: http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/ATI_with_AIGLX it should be on ServerLayout and not on ServerFlags.
I dont think it really metters cause Xorg enables it by default.

I tried compiz-git too and its really nice but kind of unstable yet, sometimes it just freezes my computer, so im back to 0.6.

Well... when you say "it works GREAT" have you tested video playback??

I've read that whit fglrx 8.43 driver bugs in video playback should be solved for r600, r500 and r300 graphic adapters: so probably this problem exists only with latest graphic adapter . Now we are at 8.45 version so now should be even better. One more thing: are we sure that 8.45 in completely compatible with 2.6.24 kernel? This driver release haven't upgraded is kernel module... someone have tested with 2.6.23 kernel?
