I've noticed some trouble related to item disposition. First of all try to disable 'Use system beep' item.

That did not work, at least or me. Once it installed I restarted emesene and still no sound. Thanks for the help, though.

I had the same problem, right clicking on emesene tray icon and deselecting "Mute Sounds" worked for me. It was on for some reason.

I dont know which window manager you use but mine didn't work either. I use compiz standalone and i had to launch it like this:
dbus-launch emesene

That fixed my sound problem.
