Colorized vi editor

Hello,

How do I go about altering or eliminating altogether terminal colorization? I prefer using lighter background screens in my terminals, and the standard color scheme doesn't favor that.
Ditto for the vi editor, but my chief complaint is that I can't seem to turn colorized highlighting off.

I'm probably overlooking something

Thanks

Re: Colorized vi editor

Try this in vi(m):

:syntax off

For the terminal colors alter your ~/.Xdefaults by adding/modifying:

*color0: #ffffff;
...
*color16: #ffffff;

HTH

Edit: don't forget to run this after modifying your .Xdefaults

% xrdb -merge .Xdefaults

Re: Colorized vi editor

in vi,  you can try setting your background (bg) variable to light/dark
:set bg=light

you can set it permanently in your .vimrc

echo "bg=light" >> ~/.vimrc
