[request] OxygenOffice Professional - Office Suite

Hello,

I'm jusst wondering why there isn't OxygenOffice Professional - Office Suite in AUR. It would be cool smile

Look: https://sourceforge.net/project/showfil … _id=170021
I don't know why, but there are only *.rpms and *.debs available.

I saw this a few days ago and I am in the same situation as you. I would have expected much more rumors about that in the forums.

Re: [request] OxygenOffice Professional - Office Suite

For the curious: from http://cybernetnews.com/2007/10/22/oxyg … templates/

Here's a list of features included in OxygenOffice:

    * Extensive collection of over 3,400 free clipart and photos (found under Tools -> Gallery)
    * 90 different fonts are included
    * Additional documentation and tools, like OOoWikipedia for searching Wikipedia, are also included
    * Lots of templates for doing things like writing resumes, creating budgets, and more
      OxygenOffice Templates
    * Improvements to the OpenOffice PDF exporter
    * Can import Office 2007 documents

One of the things that you'll have to consider when using this is that application updates will be delayed. They just released OxygenOffice 2.3 even though OpenOffice 2.3 was available over a month ago. I guess this is a good solution if you need the features mentioned above, but otherwise you should stick with the classic OpenOffice.

Re: [request] OxygenOffice Professional - Office Suite

Yes it would be nice to have this in aur.

I don't know why, but there are only *.rpms and *.debs available

After searching around in the forum I found following:

The source code of OxygenOffice Professional is available from Code - SVN section. So you can de a SVN checkout to get our code.

Re: [request] OxygenOffice Professional - Office Suite

I would like to see an improved openoffice for Arch, maybe with the Novell or Ubuntu patches...

The problem with openoffice in Arch is that it is relatively unpatched which is nice in terms of KISS, but i think OOo suffers from this... My Girlfriend uses Archs OOo for scientific stuff for example, and she has already faced many problems which do not happen on the Ubuntu version, mainly with Ms Office support and Calc functionality...

Well, i will try to build a patched OOo package in the next days...

Re: [request] OxygenOffice Professional - Office Suite

Ok, i tried it... and i have to bow before Archs OOo maintainer(s). This is just a complicated mess....

What does work:
- Applying the patches from Oxygenoffice (everything is in their svn. you have to disable Archs VBA patch to make it work)

What does not work:
- Building (make breaks at some point)
- Implementing the Oxygen extras (there is no documentation on how to include them)

Well, i guess i will try it again in some days with the Ubuntu OOo and see how far i can go with it...

However, you can install all the Oxygen extras (cliparts, templates etc) through the extension manager. Just download the extensions here: https://sourceforge.net/project/showfil … _id=208656

Re: [request] OxygenOffice Professional - Office Suite

feel free to request missing important (!) patches in our bugtracker or in the anouncement thread about the testing versions.

but usually i'd prefer to play with such stuff in our OOo unstable pkg that are just devel snapshots (former src248 builds, will soon be dev300 called).

Re: [request] OxygenOffice Professional - Office Suite

Thanks for the reply AndyRTR,

i have done some some further investigation regarding OOo and found this: http://svn.gnome.org/svn/ooo-build/

It seems to be a fully automated build environment for OpenOffice with lots of patches and improvements. They do regular releases and it seems that a lot of distros (Ubuntu, Frugalware, openSUSE for example) are using it. From their readme:

OpenOffice.org build:

This package contains Desktop integration work for
OpenOffice.org, several back-ported features & speedups, and a much
simplified build wrapper, making an OO.o build / install possible for
the common man.[1]

The latest version of this module can be obtained from
anonymous SVN with this command:

    svn co http://svn.gnome.org/svn/ooo-build/trunk ooo-build

Packaged releases can be found from:

        http://download.go-oo.org/

More documentation is in the www/ directory the latest version
of which is available at http://go-oo.org/

Finally, you can subscribe to the development mailing list at
http://lists.go-oo.org/listinfo.cgi/dev-go-oo.org

    Happy hacking.

[1] - assuming the common man has 4Gb+ of spare space, and lots of
      idle CPU time.

after some more investigation i found out that the frugalware guys are using this stuff for their packages, so maybe it could be easy to make it work in Arch too.

Just compare their PKGBUILD with the one in Arch. It is a lot less cluttered and cleaner in my opinion (ok, it looks cluttered, because they have implemented some sort of splitting, but without the splitting it really would look clean smile ), because ooo-build already provides the patches and stuff...

Well, i think i will try to port the Frugalware PKGBUILD to Arch when i have time, just to test if its worth it... And maybe someone here can tell me if this could be worth-while at all smile

EDIT: Here are some features described: http://go-oo.org/discover/

Unpatched? 53 patches are applied.

He did not say "unpatched" but "relatively unpatched", which means to me that other distros patch more.

Maybe it has been patched too much: Ugly open office fonts, dam it, how do you fix it?. The official OO is not affected.

Re: [request] OxygenOffice Professional - Office Suite

No it is not a preview. Contrary, its a "pastview" (does this word exist?) to OOo 2.3.1 with extensions regarding templates, cliparts, sample a.s.o.
These are available seperately on the download page of sourceforge ("Extensions", "Parts").

Re: [request] OxygenOffice Professional - Office Suite

I just wanna say I agree we need an (alternative) pkg for OO, maybe a PKGBUILD of Oxygen's version would be enough. It has lots of improvements that would be awesome to see included without the need of installing lots of extensions. Unfortunelly I don't have the skills to help... hmm

Re: [request] OxygenOffice Professional - Office Suite

I really do not know what you are expecting - maybe due to my weak experiences in Open Office or my weak english.

* Do you want package relying on binary rpms or debs?
* Do you want a "the arch way" package relying on the sources?
* Would it be enough to have the extensions (cliparts, fonts, templates) as a package?
* Why is this better than openoffice? Because of the extensions or are there other reasons?

Re: [request] OxygenOffice Professional - Office Suite

The main advantage in oxygenoffice is the reading of office 2007 (.docx) documents.  OpenOffice 3.0 is supposed to read .docx documents too, but it's still in beta stage...

I've been running OOo 3.0 beta for almost two months, and it's been perfectly stable for me. And, yes, it does open .docx files with no trouble.

Yeah, OOo 3 looks promising. Even when I miss the LotusSymphony-like interface and a significant performance boost, it includes many improvements.

Re: [request] OxygenOffice Professional - Office Suite

I think it would be better to just include an openoffice-oxygenoffice-plugin package. Isn't Oxygen Office just openoffice along with several addons ?
