suspend on lid close

Arch 0.8-2
kdemod
HP Compaq 8510W
Just did a full system update.

The power setting included going to suspend when the lid is closed.  When I close it, it acts like it is doing something rational---a few flickers of the HD light, then just an occasional flash of the power light.

Open the lid--nothing

hit the power button--it acts like it is coming back to life, but the screen is black.  Nothing in my repertoire will get results.

Re: suspend on lid close

Does your suspend/hibernate otherwise -  that is when you trigger it off by other means rather than closing the laptop lid?  From what you're saying it doesn't seem like suspend/hibernate is working at all on your laptop at the moment...

Re: suspend on lid close

After the computer has been idle for some time, it also seems to suspend---at least the behavior is the same.  eg, when pressing the power button, there is disk activity, the wireless light comes on---but no screen.

The kdemod power control shows suspend enabled.  There is a setting for the time delay to suspend.  Curiously, setting this to 1 minute (the minimum) does not cause it to suspend after 1 minute (as I write this--7 minutes and counting...)

Nothing happens when the power button is pressed.

Re: suspend on lid close

KDE is just a frontend for other suspend mechanism (I don't know which, I don't use KDE) -- you need to make sure that your computer is capable of suspending (for example when you issue the appropriate suspend command from the command line) before enabling it in KDE.  There are many different frameworks for suspending in linux -- pm-utils, uswsusp, tuxonice, genric tools -- and they all can be configured extensively to accommodate different kinds of hardware.  Personally I have never owned a laptop that was able to suspend/hibernate just like that -- I always had to tweak things to make it work.  Check out the wiki for more info about suspend/hibernate:
