Trying to setup openbox. I have installed it and everything but cant seem to save any changes. I am using it as my user account and not as root, but when I run obconf I get:
An error occured while saving the config file '/root/.config/openbox/rc.xml'
Also - my keyboard on my user is US when it is UK on root, anyway I can change this

It is trying to save the changes to the root's openbox config, are you sure you are not running obconf as root?
Use the Source, Luke!

I dont think so, I am typing obconf in xterm as my user so i guess thats as my user. :S
Has it anything to do with privaledges?

The best thing would be to copy the rc.xml and menu.xml to your own '~/.config/openbox' directory, then edit them, that way you should have the correct permissions, and be certain it's your regular user's files you are editing.
To be certain a quick 'chown yourusername ~/.config/openbox/*' should ensure you can write to them.

Also use obconf for setting themes only - the other stuff should be done by editing the config files...

Maybe X was running as root when openbox was set up? I didn't think running X as root was allowed, though.

I set up my Arch install that way; got X running correctly, set up sudo and then installed my regular user. I reckon that's what happened though, hence the permission problems
Is there even a ~/.config/openbox?
There always has been for me, from distro to distro O_o

I consider that an unnecessarily risky way to do it
Better to set up X from console and log in first (and every) time as user.

In before the edit Yes, I realized that was a silly question. Odd that it should default to root when accessing the conf as user, though.

when you start it are you using "openbox-session"? or just openbox"?
openbox-session is what you should be using (perhaps its sessions, with an s at the end, i can't remember.. look it up )

It's openbox-session. No "s" at the end.
