Funny problem with kde

I installed kdebase and had problem to enter KDE with exec startkde so I put exec /opt/kde/bin/startkde in xinitrc file and that worked, but now when I enter KDE I see only start icon and nothing else, there are no icon pointing to konqueror or control center even if they are in opt/kde/bin. Excuse me for my bad english, i hope you understand?

Re: Funny problem with kde

I am not really sure what you mean.
Do you mean you didn't have icons within KMenu. If so, that will be very weired and we need to further investigation.

If you mean you don't have Konqueror icon or Control center icon on your "Panel". You have to ADD some WIDGETS. Those are not program icons, but extra widgets. I am not sure if kdebase already has these widgets, if not, you may try install extra kde packages.

I use kdemod which is one of the pearls only exist in Arch.

Two parts to your problem:
1. To see icons on K-panel, right-click the panel and add some if you can.
2. To see icons on desktop, go to "control center" (it should in your K-menu as well) and there should be some options.

Re: Funny problem with kde

Because nobody knows the details of your computer, and nobody knows the details of how maintainers prepared the packages.

I suggest you to use kdemod. It is MUCH MUCH nicer looking and useful. Also, it seems to me that most kde people in Arch community use kdemod. So, go there. it has very detailed instruction and a very welcoming forum.

Re: Funny problem with kde

1. Is your desktop active? Meaning can you create say a folder on it...?
2. When you enable 'Show Icons' in Kcontrol's Desktop > Behaviour module do they appear?
3. If they appear do they stay there after logout/login?

Re: Funny problem with kde

KDEmod kept "look" settings just like KDE which I uninstalled (i had to tongue ), I can create folders and I see folders from /home partition. I think there is something wrong with the exec options in xinitrc I put exec /opt/kde/bin/startkde in xinitrc, i mean i installed KDE on my old computer 6 months ago and everything worked perfectly. If I don't find a solution I will install fresh copy of Arch on comp, because I allready have dozens of shits on my "/" partition

Re: Funny problem with kde

Some KDEmod specific stuff:

Always install it like described on the installation guide, _dont_ just install kdebase or something because it _will_ break... We have defined two handy package groups which should satisfy everyone.

To do a clean start of KDEmod:

log into a console (no X running), then delete .kde* .qt .local .thumbnails in your $HOME...

Then try to use kdm for login, just add it to the end of the DAEMONS array in your rc.conf, then reboot or do /etc/rc.d/kdm start ... It should work properly...

If you want to run it via startx, add these lines to your .bashrc

[ "$QTDIR" = "" ] && source /etc/profile.d/qt3.sh
[ "$KDEDIR" = "" ] && source /etc/profile.d/kde.sh

and then add /opt/kde/bin/startkde to .xinitrc or friends...

More info about the profile stuff here: http://kdemod.ath.cx/bugs/showreport.php?bugid=88

want a modular and tweaked KDE for arch? try kdemod

Re: Funny problem with kde

I added new user and KDEmod is up and runing smile , but deleted settings to my XFCE (old user and root) . And this is first time I saw pregenerated xinitrc file with options just waiting to be uncommented and another weird thing is I actualy started KDEmod with exec startkde not /opt/kde/bin/startkde. I must admit I am not so impressed with speed and response probably because I use XFCE and Icewm, but I'll give it a try smile

Always install it like described on the installation guide, _dont_ just install kdebase or something because it _will_ break...

I did followed guide and instaled with pacman -S kdemod because last time I used pacman -S kdemod-complete and i get a tons of programs that I don't use
