Re: xf86-video-ati problem

Is there any particular reason you are using the opensource ATI drivers?  I've been using the ATI ones for a while flawlessly.

Re: xf86-video-ati problem

Try adding the following to the end of your xorg.conf:
Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "enable"
EndSection

In Your screen section add a line after Monitor:
DefaultDepth  24

Also I don't see any modes listed in the screen section.  If you are getting the correct resolution for your monitor there is no issue here.

For quicker 3D add the following to your Device section after the Driver line:

Option  "EnablePageFlip" "enable"
Option  "BackingStore"    "enable"
Option  "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps"  "enable"

I have an X800 and these settings work well for me.

cheers

Re: xf86-video-ati problem

Ive made the changes to xorg.conf but there is still no change in my glxinfo output.. is it supose to say "OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R300 20060815 AGP 8x x86/MMX+/3DNow!+/SSE2 TCL"?

I have rendering but its really bad in example warsow and glxgears only give me about 5000fps :S

xorg.conf now:

Re: xf86-video-ati problem

Oops! Change the options I suggested from "enable" to "true".  Your log file is listing my error.

Also remove or comment the following lines in Section "Module":
GLcore
dri
drm
xtrap (???-I don't know what this module does)

Those modules will be loaded automatically at run time by the X server.

One more thing that has worked for me in the past:  change the driver from "ati" to "radeon".

Your glxinfo file for OpenGL renderer string reads the same as mine except I have a PCI-E card, not AGP.  However in my glxinfo after the direct rendering line it lists:
server glx vendor string: SGI.

Try these changes and post back.

I buy older ATI cards so I can use open source drivers and I have no trouble with them.  There has been some recent troubles here in Arch with the nvidia cards as well.

cheers

Re: xf86-video-ati problem

Allright i'll remove catalyst and reinstall the open source drivers and try out this stuff...

dont know what xtrap is either but "man xtrap" reads:

These commands are SAMPLE CLIENTS provided  with  the  XTrap  X  Server
Extension  Sources,  Version 3.3.  XTrap is an X Server extension which
facilitates the capturing of  server  protocol  and  synthesizing  core
input  events.  Information on how to obtain these sources can be found
in the SOURCES section below.

Re: xf86-video-ati problem

hmm, after doing this changes i get no rendering, i changed back to ati and still no rendering.
i have this line when i do glxinfo tho:
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2

i get this warnings in Xorg.0.log:

(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)
(WW) RADEON: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found
(WW) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP not available

Re: xf86-video-ati problem

Good! Now you have hardware rendering.  When you type glxinfo what does it say after display?

BTW, is your user listed in the video group?

Nope i don't have hardware rendering now xD changing the modules took away the little hardware rendering i had.
Yeah my user is in the video group.

Re: xf86-video-ati problem

Also add the following to the section "Device"
Option  "AGPMode" "4"

From your log it appears the AGP module is not loaded.  run lsmod to check if that module is loading upon boot.

Re: xf86-video-ati problem

i rebooted with driver "ati" and i got the rendering back, didn't uncomment the modules so it appears that wasn't the problem.

lsmod gives me this:

Re: xf86-video-ati problem

Your glxinfo is the same as mine except for no direct rendering.  What I meant by hardware rendering is taken from your first post which was using software rendering which is much slower than hardware rendering.

Re: xf86-video-ati problem

The open drivers may not be as fast as the fglrx drivers but they are continually getting better.  But you will have no hassles every time you update your kernel.  They are like the Energizer bunny-they just keep working and working.....

Re: xf86-video-ati problem

Haha yeah i see, is there someplace were one can overlook the progress with this drivers?
I wonder if compiz would work for me now... the AIGLX warning in Xorg.0.log is kinda scary yikes

Re: xf86-video-ati problem

Compiz-fusion works fine for me.  I use kde. Downloaded and configured according to the wiki.  It worked the first time and the open drivers are plenty fast enough for compiz.  Heck I've got a computer here for the kids with Arch and an old ati 9200 video card that runs compiz just fine.
