iPod Mini - Best Method?

I have an iPod mini (Windows format), and I'd like to get it working under Linux. I wouldn't be moving back and forth between Windows and Linux, it would just be Linux.
Would it be easier in the long run if I install Linux on the iPod or use some sort of iPod utility for Linux?
Keep in mind that it only has a four gig hard drive.
