openoffice won't start due to xorg.conf

So first of all, Open Office used to work.  I recently purchased a new monitor and a new graphics card (so I can run dual monitors, which is sweet btw big_smile) anyway.  since upgrading my system, open office doesn't work, and I believe the problem is rooted to my xorg.conf file or possibly the graphics card/driver.

I've got a ATI radeon x1550 card and I'm using the Catalyst driver.  when I set it up I cheated (was lazy) and used the aticonfig command to generate xorg.conf (because I'm not very knowledgeable at getting this set up on my own)  and now I need some help.  goal: get open office working.  I think this has something to do with DRI (according to the OpenOffice wiki) any ideas?

my xorg.conf:

Section "ServerLayout"

# The Identifier line must be present
# Each Screen line specifies a Screen section name, and optionally
# the relative position of other screens. The four names after
# primary screen name are the screens to the top, bottom, left and right
# of the primary screen. In this example, screen 2 is located to the
# right of screen 1.
# Each InputDevice line specifies an InputDevice section name and
# optionally some options to specify the way the device is to be
# used. Those options include "CorePointer", "CoreKeyboard" and
# "SendCoreEvents".

Re: openoffice won't start due to xorg.conf

First of all, wth did you get an ATI card? Don't you read the forums?
Just joking a little...
To your problem; You are lucky that your system doesn't freeze completely like mine does in dual head mode. I have to use BigDesktop mode which probably is better suited to your needs anyway (if you don't need AIGLX) working atm). You can create a working BigDesktop setup with aticonfig, and probably uncomment the dri and glx lines in your Module section. Maybe worth a try. Before I forget, what was the error with OpenOffice exactly?

Bye, signor_Rossi.

Re: openoffice won't start due to xorg.conf

The error is, when I use the soffice command (also when I use /opt/openoffice/programs/soffice) nothing opens. and the prompt just sits there blinking.  when I try to start it from the menu it shows up in ps aux as follows:

cyrus    20462  0.0  0.0   4508  1436 ?        Ss   11:15   0:00 /bin/sh /usr/bin/soffice
cyrus    20482  0.1  1.3  65468 21188 ?        Sl   11:15   0:00 /opt/openoffice/program/soffice.bin

and I have to kill the process. once again, no office opening up.
therefore, ultra-lame :\

Re: openoffice won't start due to xorg.conf

fdn, I actually solved this problem by changing to a different driver, so the problem is probably a bug in catalyst.  try switching to the radeonhd driver.

here's the thread I went through for setting it up. hope it's some use to you!
