Restart X11 without clients dying

Hey!

Does anybody know if it is possible to restart the X server without killing the clients that are connected to it? (GUI apps and window manager.)

Why would I want this?
Well, it would be nice to be able to do things like turning on TV-out, or reconfiguring the server without restarting all my apps.
Or if the nvidia binary driver bugs, or a key hangs.

Would it be possible to set up a proxy or something, between the server and the clients to hold the client connections up while the server is restarting? Just a thought.:D

xrandr-1.2 + nv open-source driver (2D only!) can do some of the things you want.

Okay, thanks.
So the closed source nvidia driver doesn't support XRandR 1.2? It does support changing resolution though.

Re: Restart X11 without clients dying

AFAIK only a few open source xorg drivers support xrandr do, can't tell you what exactly nvidia closed source drivers support since I have an ati rv380 unfortunately. But they probably may in the future like fglrx (on the Phoronix forums some AMD/ATI guy said that they probably will sometime tongue).
As far as I have understood from looking a little on the net nouveau (open source nvidia 3D driver) who does support xrandr-1.2 isn't ready yet for normal use.

i achieve this behavior by setting up twin-view, no need to restart or change anything, when i plug the external monitor into my laptop, it detects and activates it.
