any ideas?
i think i might have posted this already... anyway its still not working...
i am in both storage and optical groups
if I mount (with root) sdc1 into a temp dir in /mnt then pcmanfm tells me "permission denied"

EDIT:
sorry, i should have provided more info *blush*
my bad
I have a big NTFS external hdd with like 6 partitions on it
i use Hardware Abstraction Layer (hal) and when i reboot it mounts everything fine.
i can mount my devices with thunar (as normal user), but it does not let me access then (i.e. i go to the /media folder and i can see what i clicked on)
so, i mount sdc1 into /media and a dir shows up labled "Nathan" I go to the terminal and run this command:
cd /media
chown -hR nathan:users Nathan
and it takes a while.... then i still "do not have permission" to access it.
humdinger! : /

with thunar it simply says "permission denied"
whats up with that? what groups do i have to be in to access to an external harddrive???

The problem is simple - you mount the partition as root, so if you want to browse it as a normal user you couldn't , because you aren't a root. The solution is simple, edit your /etc/fstab file and add the sdc1 line and other necessary atributes, or try pmount
Also you could provide what exact filesystem does the partition have (ntfs,ext3,xfs...).

Ok, i assume you use Xfce (or Thunar at least) ![]()
I also had a NTFS partition tough i didn't need to mount manually anything or do "chown -R".
I simply followed this Ubuntu Dapper Guide where you can only READ your partition, just follow the instructions and it will mount as it should without "Permission denied" ![]()

i use openbox and pcmanfm, which crashes when opening a drive. but i can mount stuff alright... thanx for the guide thoug! ![]()
