was once lucky playing hd video on 360 using this: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=640413 worked on one file only ![]()

can't the 360 play h.264 in the mp4 container like the ps3? if it can, you don't need to transcode, you can just remux. try mkvtoolnix for mkvextract and gpac for MP4Box
also, if you do have to transcode, try avidemux

To anyone who is interested in converting mkv to xbox360 in minutes this method works for me for files < 2GB:

mkvinfo file.mkv //This is to determine which track the video and audio is and what type of audio is being used (dts, ac3, etc)
mkvextract tracks file.mkv 1:video.h264 2:audio.ac3 //This varies, of course, depending on what tracks the audio/video is on. Also this example is for ac3 audio, If your audio happens to be DTS or any other format just replace the .ac3 with the appropriate extension.
hexedit video.h264 //I change the 67 64 00 33 byte to 67 64 00 29. This is to replace what h264info does to change the level from 5.1 to 4.1. According to MP4Box's analysis of the resulting mp4 the file is in fact seen as a 4.1 file.
mkfifo audiodump.wav //to create a dummy wav file for mplayer to dump the audio into
neroAacEnc -lc -ignorelength -q 0.20 -if audiodump.wav -of audio.m4a & mplayer audio.ac3 -vc null -vo null -channels 2 -ao pcm:fast //This is converting the ac3 to aac in a m4a container using the low complexity stereo that the xbox 360 requires. If the audio is dts then just change the .ac3 to .dts
MP4Box -new fileoutput.mp4 -add video.h264 -add audio.m4a -fps 23.976 //re-mux your new and improved video (with 4.1 level) and audio (aac-lc stereo) into a mp4 container.make sure your -fps value matches the one from mkvinfo video track section.
now, is there anybody who can help me out with that 2GB limit ? Patch didnt work for me ![]()

there was a patch in the GPAC bug tracker
you have to get the cvs version of GPAC and then copy this patch to a file and patch your CVS as you build it
If you are successful, can you post a PKGBUILD? I spent weeks trying to do basically the same thing (but for PS3)
Also, do you have any problems with videos which have that wider-than-normal-widescreen format (I mean like wider than 16:9)? I found that they were always squashed into 16:9. e.g. 300

could you try and run the last comand with: -tmp /home/$USER < or where you have enough free disk space for the whole video file (eg: MP4Box -tmp /home/$USER -add video.h264 -add audio.m4a -fps 23.976 ) and report ?
it works for me but now i dont know if its because of that -tmp option or whatever ive done, (im using gpac-cvs and mplayer-svn)
as for your squashed video .. i wasnt able to test any yet because all of 'em are bigger then 2Gb and that always stopped me ![]()

that didn't work for me for some reason, xbox wouldnt recognize output file

I just had an idea for the 2 gb limit thing
With avidemux, you can split the video in half (or whatever to get below 2gb) without re encoding (so no loss of quality) and you could then do all the normal steps with each half of the video, remux with MP4Box, then join the files together again.

i can get all my files to play on xbox360 the thing is that i don't know what did it . i don't know if it was the patch that worked for me or that "-tmp" option in MP4Box . could any of you test this for me ? gpac-cvs without patching it and just add -tmp <dir> in the last step and let us know if thats the problem ?

I'll have a go but might be a couple of days till I can

Got this off of sourceforge dont know if it will help.
You have to edit the vfolder.cfg and change the node:
<vfolder name="Folders" id="21" />
in the xbox layout to:
<vfolder name="Folders" id="21">
<folders filter="contains(videoItem)" />
</vfolder>
There are 10 types of peaple in the world. Those who know binary and those that don't.

I made a script to remux a mkv to MP4 such that the Xbox can play it (http://mano.student.utwente.nl/Linux/happy360.txt).
It's based on a script by Satori/Mike from www.linuxlove.info (http://www.linuxlove.info/site/17/conve … -xbox-360/) and the commands mentioned above.
Basic command:
happy360 yourfile.mkv --> This will result in one or more yourfile-00*.mp4 files in the current folder. The amount of files is based on the size of the original mkv. A 4,2 GB mkv as input will give 2 MP4's of ~2,3 GB. Als a log file named happy360-yourfile.log will be given.
Advanced options:
happy360 yourfile.mkv 0.6 0 /srv/Xbox360 --> 0.6 is the sound quality (can have a value between 0.1 and 1). 0 let's the script know you don't want to keep the logfile after completion ( 1 let's it know you do). By inputting a folder as the 4th argument the script will move completed mp4 files to that folder, for example /srv/Xbox360.
Todo list:
- Check if splitting in 2,3 GB files is needed.
- Feedback/error message when second input for the audioquality is not between 0.1 and 1.
- Feedback/error message if third argument is not 0 or 1.
- Change advanced input from a 0.6 0 /folder form to: -Audio=60 -keeplog=no -destfolder=/folder.
- Introduce a -help.
- Speed optimalizations. For example by mplayer audiooutput | normalize | neroaac.
- Check if needed programs are installed. [Done - 30-11-2009]
