Widescreen xf86-video-intel

I'm running a

Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller

video in my Sony notebook. 1280x800 is the native resolution.  With the i810 driver, Xorg starts this perfectly with no 810/915resolution hacks. I just install xf86-video-i810 and it magically works.

I've opted to try the xf86-video-intel driver though, because I like to break stuff. Even with the modeline for the monitor and the Modes set, it will only pull up an off center 1024x768 screen. Quite annoying. Comiz and such still works, but I'm unable to get the widescreen. I don't see any errors in my log file either. (I wish I could attach small text files to this...)

Any suggestions?

Re: Widescreen xf86-video-intel

THe xorg.conf and modeline was added because not having it didn't work in the first place.

Re: Widescreen xf86-video-intel

Do you have any errors or warnings in your /var/log/xorg.log?

IIRC I used xorg-video-intel on my fathers laptop (HP Compaq 6720s), running the same 1280x800 resolution without a problem (i.e. no modelines whatsoever).

Re: Widescreen xf86-video-intel

I deleted Xorg.0.log and then installed xf86-video-intel (I've been switch between that and the i810 which actually works)

The first run I just ran X with no xorg.conf. This resulted in the vesa driver being used. I ran X -configure, which detected the intel driver and generated a xorg.conf (like the one above). When I used this /root/xorg.conf.new it came up with the 1024x768. Below is the Xorg.0.conf from this arrangement. Hopefully someone will notice something I missed.

This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.
It is not supported in any way.
Bugs may be filed in the bugzilla at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
Select the "xorg" product for bugs you find in this release.
Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions please check the
latest version in the X.Org Foundation git repository.
See http://wiki.x.org/wiki/GitPage for git access instructions.

Re: Widescreen xf86-video-intel

Hm, perhaps your bios doesn't deliver the correct modes. You might want to check out 915resolution, with which you could change one reported mode into 1280x800 as described here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_GMA_945.

Re: Widescreen xf86-video-intel

QuimaxW: I have experienced a similar problem to yours with my new laptop, and I recently discovered a solution for it (using the xf86-video-intel driver).  Here's what I did-

While logged into X, run this command in a terminal and observe the output:

xrandr

If you see an entry for a TV device (mine started with "TV connected 1024x768+0+0"), then run the following command:

xrandr --output TV --off

This immediately corrected my screen/display resolution problem (now it's displaying the correct 1280x800).

Here's the page where I discovered this solution:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/140999

Edit: Also, vogets posted a more optimal solution in another thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 48#p328248

I've tried 915resolution (and i810resolution) when I was using Suse ages ago. I never actually needed them though in Arch. The i810 detects the proper resoltion without it. Kinda like my BIOS might actually be programed properly! smile

Re: Widescreen xf86-video-intel

I tried this, and it didn't seem to do anything.

As root, I ran init 3, then startx.

From xterm in the X session, I ran xrandr, which showed a TV output that it stated was disconnected already. So I ran the xrandr --output TV --off and nothing happened.

Restarted X, and it still came back to the 1024x768. Perhaps with the intel driver I do need to have 915 resolution configured...really didn't want to take that step backwards though.

What happens if you run startx as a normal user and run xrandr?

Could you post the entire output of xrandr (logged into X as a normal user)?

Re: Widescreen xf86-video-intel

As a normal user the output is as follows:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 1024
VGA disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 59.9*+ 85.0 75.0 70.1 60.0
   832x624 74.6
   800x600 85.1 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
   640x480 85.0 72.8 75.0 59.9
   720x400 85.0
   640x400 85.1
   640x350 85.1
TV disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

xrandr --output TV --off has no visible output in the console.

output of cat /var/log/Xorg.0.conf |grep intel yields...

Re: Widescreen xf86-video-intel

i have similar problem, i find the solution in this thread. You have to edit xorg.conf and create a new monitor and disable Tv-out manually
