passwd: cannot determine your user name

First time using Arch.

When using the setup utility to change the root's passwd on the installation it gives the following error

passwd: cannot determine your user name

i already went outside the setup chrooted to /mnt and tried changing it manually but the same things seems to happen... any ideas?

Re: passwd: cannot determine your user name

I'm not sure if this will work but I used it successfully in gentoo once when my root passwd was messed up and believe me you don't want to reinstall gentoo too many times.  Change your boot kernel line in grub by adding init=/bin/sh to the end of the line (hint: push e to edit when your grub menu comes up and edit the line)
When you are in the terminal type in:

mount -o rw,remount /dev/sdaxx (note: xx is your root partition)

Then type in:

passwd

If all has gone right you will be able to enter a new password.  Hope it works.

Sorry, I might have misunderstood your question.  This solution would only work if you already had arch installed, obviously.

Re: passwd: cannot determine your user name
