open custom apps through xdg-open

hello,

how can i tell xdg-open to open files in rox and urls in firefox?
i have BROWSER="firefox" in my bashrc, but now xdg-open opens everything, also files, in firefox, if i leave this out i get the "cannot open blahblahblah" message.  this starts to get really annoying.
how can i edit the xdg-open default apps?

I also have this same problem.
I've solved it now. I use openbox.

First, I included this in autostart.sh

export DE=gnome

Thus it uses the gnome preferences to open files. However, I then had to edit /usr/bin/xdg-open to use gvfs-open instead of gnome-open.
