alsa problems

Despite trying the method on the wiki to get dmix to kick in(if for some reason it doesn't automatically) it still only allows one  application at a time to play sound.  I check to make sure that my hardware is being detected, and it appears to be. I don't know, maybe it is loading some conflicting modules:

MODULES=(ndiswrapper b44 mii snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss snd-hwdep snd-page-alloc snd-pcm snd-timer snd snd-hda-intel powernow-k8 soundcore fglrx)

I don't have this problem on my desktop so it took me by surprise with my laptop, not sure what to do. Maybe try to alternative?
