Empty /etc/rc.conf? I got lost.

Hello,

I'm following the Beginners Guide provided in the wiki, the steps have been carefully written until the final step: the configuration. It seems that many things changed since that guide was written.

The file /etc/rc.conf is empty. Should I leave it that way? The guide is saying that many lines there need to be edited by me, but nothing is there. Is it a matter of adding them myself?

I've uncommented languages I need (ar and en), anything yet to be configured?

I got that once when I did the simple install and did not let it include the default packages, not sure which package was amiss that caused it.

Please don't be offended, but are you SURE that you typed in the correct path/name to rc.conf?

If you use nano and use the wrong path it will open an empty file.

You should try again, I guess.
There has been some bug report about this recently, maybe you should report there:
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/8898
When I encountered this problem I hadn't select all needed packages the first time... since I wanted to do two separated installs of pacman and the filesystem package.... this didn't work however, after I did a new install it went fine again... not sure what it is exactly but hopefully next time you try it just works (use some magic ), else you should really report your problems and configuration to above bugtask.

I think that the path is OK because I'm choosing it from the Configuration menu.

I think I've found it.

In the wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Rc.conf) they said:

This is what a typical rc.conf file looks like after a fresh installation.

Anybody, any idea?

Yep, that's a typical rc.conf for ya.

I guess you could just fill it in with the stuff from the wiki, but have you tried installing again because i'm other areas could be screwed up aswell.

Thank you ALL guys, I think I was fool enough to unselect the base packages in the process! I've just gone back and select the base package. For now the file is filled up.

My second question is that I've selected Arabic and English from locale.gen, and want my time zone to be +3, how could I add that to rc.conf and what else to be edited?

I don't know if this can be done during install (you can always do it later anyways), but navigate to the /usr/share/zoneinfo directory and you should find some files and folders signifying timezones.

For example, I live in England so in that directory there is a 'Europe' folder, and inside there is a 'London' file. In rc.conf I simply put:

TIMEZONE="Europe/London"

Just find the right timezone and insert it in.

If you have no problem with silly questions: how to navigate through directories? I've tried many ways but every time I fail.

'cd' is the command you are looking for. You may want to use 'ls' aswell (that's LS) which lists the folders and files in the current directory.

For example, use your xterm terminal and type in:

cd /

This will take you to the root directory. Then type in:

ls

This will show a list of the folders and files in the directory you have just navigated to.

You can then use 'cd' again to navigate into any of the listed directories. This website is really helpful!
