my user belongs to the group video, i have tried chmoding tmp but that was a pacman bug in an older version, im thinking it could be something of acpi since i made a few changes before posting this and it said i had no permission to write on acpi_video1/brightness <--- dont remember the full path, i can reproduce that if u guysa need it, this happened twice ona fresh install on the same notebook.

Re: cannot startx as normal user (other posts cant help me)

you installed fonts? can you post:

ls -l /

what happens if you don't use xorg.conf? (rename it)
what iso's did you use?
the fact that root startx works well makes me very suspicious it's the /tmp bug... also the behavior you are describing was exactly what happened to me when /tmp had wrong permissions...
just to be sure:

chmod 1777 /tmp
chmod +t /tmp

- I havent installed any fonts, but thisa doesnt seem to be the problem.

-I used the latest iso 2007.8

-forgot to say that i used this same cd to install on a desktop machine and this particular thing worked. had other issues but this worked.

thanks for helping

Re: cannot startx as normal user (other posts cant help me)

i people, i installed arch sucefully in a pc today but i think i'm suffering from the same problem. I even found it really strange.
I installed from the unetubuin, that installs a system only from the latest packages.

Did everything fine, x11, xfce, gdm, drivers, etc...
If i try to run startxfce4 with root it works, but with the user it doesn't. Then rebooted and made sytem go to init 5, then from gdm tried again and it's the same...

Any help is welcomed. I probably can only report back in monday, since i can't acess that pc till then...

Re: cannot startx as normal user (other posts cant help me)

I had a similar issue this morning, exact same symptoms.  I noticed that if I started X from the command line the last line of output when it dumped me out was a message about being unable to write to '.ICEauthority' in my home directory.  Doing 'chmod 777 ./.ICEauthority' in my home directory fixed the problem...however, I've no idea what that file is or if I've just opened a huge security hole in my machine.

yea, i would also suggest both last suggestions.

Re: cannot startx as normal user (other posts cant help me)

i'm not sure its helpful, given my lack of knowledge. but one of the errors is to do with type1, i was reading one of the wiki articles last night that mentioned commenting out the line "module type1" in xorg.conf. i also had to do the same thing when i upgrade to xorg 1.5 i think
