I would like to notice some weird behavior related with asus laptops.
Since my Arch first installation normally at boot time asus-laptop module was loaded, but after last kernel upgrade ( to: Linux version 2.6.24-ARCH (root@artin) (gcc version 4.2.3) #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Feb 27 01:15:32 CET 2008 ) asus_acpi module is loaded first, and asus-laptop can't be loaded because "No such device". Sincerely I don't know what decides about this, but asus-laptop works perfectly, and asus_acpi doesn't.
Following this comment:
# NOTE: Use of 'MOD_BLACKLIST' is deprecated. Please use ! in the MODULES array.
I added to my rc.conf
MODULES=(!asus_acpi ...)
and asus_acpi is still loaded after boot.
[EDIT]
hm... i added to modules...
MODULES=(asus-laptop !asus_acpi ...)
and now works... but i think that only because asus_acpi now says "no such device"... i think that there is something wrong with blacklisting modules
[/EDIT]
Maybe someone know why there is such change in order of loading modules?
or maybe someone know where with asus_acpi i can turn on/off wifi and bluetooth with hardware switch?
with asus-laptop it was here: /sys/devices/platform/asus-laptop/{wlan,bluetooth}

That's a weird behaviour. Anyway, did you add asus_acpid in DAEMONS or did you run in another way?

Don't you like this classic way?
/etc/rc.d/bluetooth stop
hciconfig hci0 downOffline

I don't have anything like asus_acpid. There is no such daemon in my system... I simply use acpi to handle events. I've copied some scripts from debian, some have wrote by myself. Before I didn't anything special to get asus-laptop module loaded.

/etc/rc.d/bluetooth stop hciconfig hci0 down
this classic way is also implemented in my scripts, but i've thought that those hardware switches may save some battery...
Now after changes in rc.conf everything is like before upgrade, so it's ok.
But i don't know what is wrong with blacklisting modules, or what else can ask to load asus_acpi...

Hi
I known what i am going to ask is not directly related to the topic but I have an Asus G1 laptop with a very annoying problem, probably involving acpi management.
The laptop emits an awful high pitch noise when unplugged from AC. When I plug the AC back, the noise immediatly disappears. Unplugging, the noise comes back. Seems like the fan is not 'going round'. Of course this noise does not occur with Windows, this is not a hardware failure. If I disable acpi, I don't have the high pitch noise anymore (but computer is globally more noisy as the processor is 100%).
As I see you seem to be asus-laptop fellows, I permit myself to ask if you could see where the problem is coming from.
The situation is very frustrating for me as I am currently not able tu use my laptop ... as a laptop ! (must always plug it to AC, I use it as a desktop).
Here is a sample of my rc.conf :
MODULES=(r8169 !ipw3945 iwl3945 raw1394 ieee1394 ohci1394 dv1394 !p4-clockmod ac battery button fan !asus_acpi asus-laptop acpi-cpufreq cpufreq_stats cpufreq_ondemand cpufreq_powersave cpufreq_conservative cpufreq_userspace nvidia vboxdrv !vboxadd !vboxvfs fuse)
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !ipw3945d dbus hal !hwd network cpufreqd !cpudyn !dhcdbd !networkmanager netfs crond @samba alsa !asus_acpid lapsusd @cups !bluetooth kdm !powersaved)
thanks

Hm... to be honest, I don't know. I've never had any problems with acpi and strange noises.
You may try to load or unload some more acpi modules(modprobe -l | grep acpi), maybe look at any parameters of them, or check is there this noise with asus_acpi(you must unload asus-laptop first), if You haven't done this yet.
I don't have any constructive suggestion. Good luck! May the Force be with You! ![]()
