I'm going to get a new motherboard, eventually. However, I need to know: how do you figure out what kind of slot your CPU uses? Is it possible to do so without opening the case?

To identify your processor, on the command line type: uname -p

Given how cheap new processors are, (in canada, the lowest end - dual core amd or intel chips can be had for <$75), and depending on how expensive a compatible overclockable motherboard may be, you would likely get better performance, and less headaches, for a similar cost by replacing everything.
